Some more obscure favorites to add to this topic....

1) A DAY IN PARIS Rhymes On Vinyl / Prey (2 EP's)
2) DAVE ADAMS Dancing In My Sleep LP (trendy synth-pop from 1986)
3) ART IN THE DARK 4 Song E.P. (as close to "Murmer" era R.E.M. as you can get - the band was out of Athens & produced by Mitch Easter.
4) THE CARGO SECT - Independence LP (amazing start to finish & very rare)
5) THE EXPRESSION Conscience LP (2nd release from this great band)
6) FREE WORLD (self-titled LP from 1986)...little known synth / electronics band from CT.
7) IT'S ALL OVER (self-titled LP from about 1986 - local Winter Park FL alternative band.
8) PASSION PUPPETS Beyond The Pale LP (1984)
9) THE TALK New Language LP (obscure synth-wave from MT in 1984)
10) WAVES OF GRAIN The West Was Fun LP (CA band from 1985)

As with any top ten list - it could all change tomorrow.

Here's something for you-there was a great mostly all-female band called Wednesday Week that has ties to the Pandoras, "Paisley Underground" and The Last.

I just found their website www.wednesdayweek.com and found out their still together!!

The album on Enigma-I guess it's available on CD -but I have it on Vinyl-called "What We Had" -they had a 12" ep that was fab called "Betsy's House."

anyway-the good news for me is that the band is assembling a rarities set-so I'll soon have new Wednesday Week to listen to!!

Gee Dev-I somehow knew depite our brief row over the merits of porg rock-we would have more in common than different-I spent a good hour perusing the Wednesday Week web site and links-there's a whole tribe of people surrounding the whole wednesday week/pandoras/urinals/100 flowers/last axis that are all very much involved with music and running "boutique" labels off of the Internet and doing club gigs-

It almost reminds me of the whole "international pop underground" scene of the mid-80s-guess the more things change-the more they stay the same-eh?

Pretty Much, Pike. It's a sorry state of affairs that so many good artists are forced to do their own marketing these days. I really think the corporate music industry is terrible as ever. No wonder their sales keep slipping every year. You would think they would smell the coffee. Oh well, I can go on and on about the biz... [xx(]

BTW, I know we probably share more likes than dislikes. Even so, a little disagreement is always good. Since you like Wednesday Week, do you know the band, Devonsquare? Similar sound. Good folky stuff.

I don't know that group-but now I know to look for them-it may be good that some of these artists are doing their own marketing-they know who their fans are and what sort of people like their music-Kelly Callan of Wednesday Week is now a label head in addition to being a musician-so, I'm sure she has more control over what she does-also they can run it an economy of scale-they know how much product to put out and know they can hawk it online and at their gigs

And some of these people market each other's stuff-Sid Griffin (Long Ryders) sells some of Peter Case's stuff on his web site and I'm sure that others so the same and link to each other

Two favorites that have stood the test of time:
Shriekback-Jam Science
Magazine-The Correct Use of Soap (Noted that a CD of Howard Devoto's "Jerky Versions of the Dream" is going for upwards of $147 on e-bay. Anybody noticing? How about a re-issue.)

I'm transfering to cd as we speak.

A cross between OMD, Expanded Heads, Numan, Ultravox pretty good for a one man band from New York. The east coast had John Ruth and the west coast had Dane Conover (Trees).

Royal Family and the Poor-Temple of the 13 Tribe
APB-Something to Believe In
Dark Day-Windows
