Y'know Angie the song you are referring to fits the bill for "Secrets" by OMD from the album "Crush" by Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark"

Although they are not my favourite band, their two songs are my all time favourites from the 80's:

B-Movie - Nowhere Girl
B-Movie - A Letter From Afar

others include:

Hubert Kah - The Picture
OMD - Souvenir
Freur - Doot Doot
The Pet Shop Boys

In 1993 OMD'S Andy McCluskey and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk teamed up in Bartos band ELEKTRIC MUSIC...If you like OMD and Kraftwerk like I do you'll love the song KISSING THE MACHINE...It ranks as one of Andy McCluskey's best songs.
