Discovering songs through commericals

Postby ru480s2 » Fri Feb 11, 2005 4:36 am

Boo hoo, your favorite song has been used to hock wares in a commercial, that's nothing new, but have you ever discovered a great song through a commercial? I just discovered the Sonic's "Have Love Will Travel" from an SUV commercial, that song really kicks some serious ass.

Although not really 80's, I discovered "The Dandy Warhols" Bohemian like You from a car commercial.

What about the Cure "Pictures of you" for HP Products. I love this commercial. Is this actually the Cure or is it another band signing?

YES! I totally LOVE that song in the new iPod commercial...I sleuthed on the 'net and found out that it is The Caesars, & the song is "Jerk It Out". Oh my gosh, I love this song. I checked out more clips from them on Amazon--they have this Farfisa organ thing going on, a la Swingin' Medallions or Sir Douglas Quintet, mixed with an 80's sound. It's awesome.

Over the past couple years, I've discovered some fab new music just thru a stinkin' commercial (and I usually mute commercials anyway--):
1. Mr. Scruff "Get a Move On" from that Lincoln Navigator commercial where the car is driving around in a rainy city.
2. Dirty Vegas "Days Go By" from that car commercial where the girl in that pink hat is poppin' it out in the car, being driven around.
3. Kinks "Picture Book" from the recent hp commercial--NOT a new song, but totally cool !
4. Madonna "Love Profusion" from that Estee Lauder perfume commercial
5. Still trying to find the song from that car commercial where the couple each wants to drive the car, and so they try to out-awake each other so they can be the first to drive it. Funny commercial, can't find the song.

All these damn car commercials ( I HATE SUVS and other new cars) but DAY-um, they use great songs !!!!

most recently:

That awesome Nike Warriors commercial, with the freaky spirit masks that the athletes are wearing… I loved the music they used and I found out it's an old Cop Shoot Cop song!

Iggy pop just sold out. I heard Lust for life in a car commercial. I was watching "History Detectives" on PBS the ther day and the song they play during the end credits is "Watching the Detectives" by Elvis Costello, I thought that was pretty cool[8D]

They drilled the Jet song into us pretty good. I forget the rest. Maybe a Black Eyed Peas song?

Not New Wave but VW had a killer run of commercials in the 90s, rivaling anything that Apple did IMHO. The New Beetle ad with Hooverphonic's "Renaissance Affair" was very cool. I'm embarrassed to say I rediscovered Nick Drake through the VW Cabrio's "Pink Moon" commerical - my dad was a big fan when he was in Vietnam! The Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" was another classic.

First heard "Ocean Man" by Ween on a commercial. Loved it. Bought it. Don't remember what the commercial was trying to sell me.

hehe...i first heard that one about 15 years ago as the bumper on sports talk show (whose host shall remain nameless).

For me, it was discovering "Surfing on a Rocket" by Air, which was in a Nissan commercial

I discovered Baltimora from a Listerine commercial a few years back. Even though it is new wave, it was not really played on the radio or in clubs here in SoCal. I was really sad when I looked up Baltimora on the Internet and found out that he had died of AIDS years ago.

The sad truth is that commercials are the best place to hear music - not the radio.

Thanks for identifying that song for me! I agree, it's great! (dunno if it qualifies as new wave).

Question: Are you familiar with the Geico commercial, where the guy reads a letter, asking that the geko "do the robot"? Very electronic. Then last night I saw a L'Oreal commercial, with, I think the same music. Can anybody identify it?
