Help with Electronic "Get The Message" USA CDS

Postby Fred Taghon » Mon Sep 23, 2024 2:11 pm

I own Electronic's "Get The Message" 1991 USA CDS, but every time I've ripped it, Track 1 always comes back as "NG" (no good). I rip on Mac with XLD. The final results show "No errors occurred", but that Track 1 is always a "NG". I've verified my rip on a Windows laptop using CueTools and it shows all tracks but Track 1 are accurate. Is anyone able to get a verifiably accurate rip of Track 1 on their copy of this CDS? Perhaps my copy has a manufacturer defect that no other copies had?

This is what I get on my ripping Log:

AccurateRip Summary (DiscID: 00053dbf-0018cbb7-38062c05)

Thank you Crichert! That did the trick!

I was a little worried at first, because your file is actually 2secs shorter than mine, which seemed really strange and presented a challenge in verifying that it was an accurate rip. So I loaded both files into an audio editing app and copy/pasted your file's audio overtop of (replacing) mine, matching them up precisely at the same exact audio wavelength, so that your audio was now the same exact length as mine (it left the last 2secs of my audio's silence in tact). I was then able to use Mac's XLD ripping software to verify that every track was an accurate rip, including that troublesome Track 1. All good! So, I burned it to CD-R and then ripped the CD-R just to make double sure. Success!

AccurateRip Summary (DiscID: 00053dbf-0018cbb7-38062c05)
Track 01 : OK (v1+v2, confidence 53/60)
Track 02 : OK (v1+v2, confidence 82/82)
Track 03 : OK (v1+v2, confidence 81/81)
Track 04 : OK (v1+v2, confidence 81/81)
Track 05 : OK (v1+v2, confidence 79/79)
->All tracks accurately ripped.

The fact that the Track 1 results are so different from the rest tells me that there must be a number of "defective" discs out there for this release. Maybe my copy is one of a particular batch that had some kind of manufacturing error. I've encountered at least one other person's rip that also had a defective Track 1.

I did a quick experiment where I repeated my "fix-it" process, but only used all but the last 5 seconds of audio from your file. When inserted over my file's audio, I could then see if they still matched up where your file's audio ended. To my surprise, my audio apparently did have a glitch somewhere, because there was an additional fragment of audio on my file where they SHOULD have matched up perfectly! Mystery somewhat solved. No idea what caused the glitch/error/defect on my copy. But now I can sleep at night knowing I finally have a 100% accurate rip lol. Yeah, yeah, I know, get a life! Ha!

Again, thanks for your help!

It's always possible that your specific pressing got messed up. It's also possible for a drive to get consistent read errors, which is why something like AccurateRip is important (in addition to a secure rip). Try ripping with a completely different drive (completely different as in different chipset/brand).

Instead of doing the copy/paste thing, you can use CueTools to repair your rip. In the main window: Action -> Encode -> dropdown box, select Repair.
