• Dead Or Alive have sold more than 30 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide and gave Stock Aitken Waterman their first #1 single. Their first three albums, which the band wrote, all reached the UK Top 30, with ‘Youthquake’ reaching the Top 10.
• In the 1980s, they charted seven unique singles in the UK Top 40, with two further re-entries this century, with a remix and original version of ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)’.
• Respected US magazine Billboard, ranked them in their all-time Top 100 most successful ‘dance artists’ chart.
• This limited edition 27 CD box set collates the Singles originally released on CBS Records (Sony Music) and subsequently by the Band itself, with selected licenses that Pete Burns and Steve Coy made with other companies.
• To preserve the authenticity in this CD Singles Box Set, the tracks included on these CD Singles predominantly appeared on the various formats of the official international versions, so there will be instances where different B-sides were released, as well as the inclusion of a duplication of tracks from previous singles.
• The individual newly mastered re-issues, are packaged in replica mini-sleeves from across Dead Or Alive’s domestic and international releases.

Re: DEAD OR ALIVE "STILL SPINNIN’ - THE SINGLES 27 CDs

Postby Fred Taghon » Tue Nov 21, 2023 8:51 am

I'm conflicted, yet hopeful and excited about this release.

On the face of it, this is essentially what every Dead Or Alive fan has been asking for since the abandoned Japanese remix collection that was announced nearly 20yrs ago. The 2016 "Sophisticated Boom Box" 19-disc set from Edsel/Demon (which I have) was an ambitious step toward fulfilling every Dead Or Alive fan's wet dreams. Upon release, it was plagued with so many errors that 11 of the discs had to be re-manufactured and replaced. The replacement discs largely made everything right, but the lack of oversight and quality control was of mythic proportions and tainted what, EVENTUALLY, became a must-have release for DOA fans and collectors

So I hope Edsel/Demon have learned their lessons from that whole experience. Their Bananarama 36-CD "In A Bunch" box set from 2015 was impeccably executed from sound quality to packaging. It looks like the presentation for this new DOA set is very similar, which is, potentially, a very good starting point. There's no indication of who did the remastering, though they do say everything is newly remastered for this set. I hope they kept notes of all the errors made on the 2016 set and went back to all the master tapes they eventually dug up for all the repressed/corrected discs in that set. I hope they use the original master for "You Spin Me Round (Murder Mix)" that was located for the 2011 Phil Harding "Club Mixes Of The 80's" compilation! Is Tom Parker (the man who compiled and mastered the Bananarama box set) involved in any way???

IF the team curating this project rose to the challenge, this has the potential to be one of the most revered Dead Or Alive releases ever. Fingers crossed!

I have the Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI and Invincible box sets. Would be curious to know what additional tracks are included here.

I only have the "Boom Box" so I know the last 2 discs would be totally new to me. One track that instantly stood out was "Baby Don't Say Goodbye (Cheer's Vocal)". I had the US 12inch with that mix on it and was disappointed it wasn't on the "Boom Box". Will have to take a closer look and see what else is "new" that wasn't on the "Boom Box".

...and yet, "Due to licensing restrictions, ‘Give It To Me [BBC Session]’ was unavailable for inclusion within this set."

But it's on Boom Box!

Spent some time comparing this release to Boom Box (Epic years only). Highlights for me are getting the Anything [Dub] on CD (was missed on Boom Box), the You Spin Me Round [Buzzing Bees Mix] (was on SAW singles box set, what is this mix?) and all of the tracks highlighted below from the Baby Don’t Say Goodbye disc. Wasn’t aware of those UK-only mixes, several of which are on both a rare CD single and promo 12″ I didn’t know about.

CD 2: What I Want
The Stranger [Re-Recorded Version] 4:51 (On Sophisticated Boom Boom Cherry Red 2007 reissue, not on Boom Box)

CD 3: I’d Do Anything
Anything [Dub] 4:26 (from the I’d Do Anything 12″, was missed on Boom Box)

CD 5: You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) [Buzzing Bees Mix] 10:12 (was on the 2015 SAW Singles Box Set, aka 'TDF' mix (look it up), was this released prior?)

CD 8: My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)
MISSING: My Heart Goes Bang [7” American Wipe Out Mix] 3:31 (not on Boom Box either)

CD 11: Hooked on Love
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) [Recorded Live at the Golden Suspender] 6:56 (from Hooked on Love 12", not on Boom Box)

CD 12: I’ll Save You All My Kisses
Whirlpool 4:19 (from the Q3 12″; on Let Them Drag My Soul Away set, not on Boom Box)
Nowhere to Nowhere 2:35 (from the Q3 12″; on Let Them Drag My Soul Away set, not on Boom Box)

CD 15: Baby Don’t Say Goodbye
Baby Don’t Say Goodbye [Edited Pop Version] 4:01 (not on Boom Box, Radio Edit was 4:27, source for this?)
Baby Don’t Say Goodbye [12″ House Version] 6:09 (from UK CD single/UK promo 12″, not on Boom Box)
Baby Don’t Say Goodbye [Pop Version] 4:17 (from UK CD single/UK promo 12″, not on Boom Box)
Mini Megamix: Come Home with Me Baby/Stop Kicking My Heart Around/Give It Back (That Love Is Mine) 2:54 (from UK CD single/UK promo 12″, not on Boom Box)
Baby Don’t Say Goodbye [Cheer’s Vocal] 7:09 (from US 12″, Danny Tenaglia remix, not on Boom Box)
Baby Don’t Say Goodbye [Danny’s Dub] 3:32 (from US 12″, Danny Tenaglia remix, not on Boom Box)
Nude Mega Mix: Come Home (With Me Baby)/Stop Kicking My Heart Around/Give It Back That Love Is Mine/Baby Don’t Say Goodbye/ Turn Around and Count 2 Ten/I Don’t Wanna Be Your Boyfriend [Unreleased] 8:43 (‘unreleased’)

Also post-Epic years I see this mix not on Boom Box (haven't gone through that era in detail):
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) [Tyme Vs Hoops Mix] 6:48 (from Aussie 12″/cd single and french promo 12″ which incorrectly uses ‘Time’ instead of ‘Tyme’ in the title, not on Boom Box)

'Anything [Dub]' was also a cassette bonus track on the debut album.

The Buzzing Bees Mix (unofficially referred to as 'The Two Dogs Fucking' mix) was done in 1984 and got as far as an acetate pressing, but ultimately went unreleased. It was first released on the PWL box set, and again on the 3CD PWL set a few years later, but it's never been on a Dead Or Alive specific release.

The 'Live at the Golden Suspender' track is notable for Pete changing the words to "open up your loving legs" and was on the UK 7" of 'Hooked On Love'.

The cancelled UK single formats for 'Baby Don't Day Goodbye' included a double A-side 7" which had the edited House and edited Pop versions on either side. The full Pop Version is in fact the Japan-only 'Nude' CD bonus track 'Alternative Mix'. The Nude Megamix was designated for a remix 12" single and is what the 'Mini Mix' was edited down from to meet chart regulations for the CD single.

I don't have it - but reviews have not been good.

Re-posted from Steve Hoffman forums:

7-06, 8-07, 11-02, 14-04, 15-07, 15-09, 15-12 and 22-09 are all lossy (some ripped directly from YouTube) and vinyl sourced - they're from the same sources as the 'Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI'.
- 15-07 ('Baby Don't Say Goodbye (The Powerful Club Twelve)') has heavy noise reduction applied in the intro.
- 22-09 ('You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) (Blue Sky Mix)') plays too fast (pitch being affected) and skips in the intro.

12-06 and 12-07 are vinyl sourced - they're from the same sources as the Let Them Drag My Soul Away set.

1-05 and 2-02 have been taken directly from the 2007 Cherry Pop 'Sophisticated Boom Boom' CD reissue. Each track (more noticeably on 'Selfish Side') has the ending of their respective preceding tracks from that release erroneously mixed into their intros.

22-04 skips in the second verse - this is from the same source as the 'Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI'. Like that set, this mix should be the the the full 5:00 version, but it's the 4:36 edit that appeared on the US CD release of 'Nukleopatra'. (Note: that CD does not have the skip.)

When comparing the mastering of this set to the original CD (where applicable) releases the tracks appeared on, the dynamic range on the originals is superior and hasn't been affected by brickwalling / excessive loudness - which this release has.

"Dead Or Alive have sold more than 30 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide" - I'm curious about the source of this information. DOA have never remotely had this level of sustained worldwide success. Most countries don't even have organizations tracking the sales now, much less in the 1980s. The chart information (by the way, I compiled a comprehensive list, have a look) doesn't support this claim either. Who comes up with these vastly inflated numbers and for what purpose?

Maybe they're counting the 30 million different compilations You Spin Me Round has appeared on? :D
