Wow..
Almost 5 years since I caught wind of this project and lo and behold, it finally debuted last Thursday at the https://tribecafilm.com/filmguide/dare-to-be-different-2017 . In 2013, I was fortunate enough to be interviewed for the movie in the company of 2 fellow members of the largest WLIR group on FB (almost 16K members). It was truly humbling to see that a portion of our 1+hr on camera interview made the final cut (amongst a plethora of the who's who of 80's music icons, broadcast and record industry luminaries). That said, I must give my sincerest thanks to El Presidente- Mike Paulson for having created the NWO which was the catalyst for bringing together so many grieving WLIR listeners back in early 2004 when it signed off the air for the last time. so many posts of personal stories across countless threads (sadly, many no longer accessible). Now there's a critically acclaimed documentary film that will preserve the legacy of the halcyon era (1982~87) of the little LI FM radio station that coined the now iconic phrase "Dare To Be Different"

The film was a resounding success. All the screenings sold out in 45 minutes (third fastest in the festival) and they had to add additional screenings.

Long Island's Newsday did a story on it and even the LA Times gave it a great review.

There is a lot of buzz and I know the filmmakers (!) are looking to get wider distribution.

How is the documentary? The premier + concert was sold out according to the website.

'WLIR' still broadcasts (I'm using the name + broadcasts loosely) on the Internet, but it's tended towards a AAA sound.

Documentary is excellent. Mixes the story of WLIR -- with many of the DJ's -- and the overall story of 80's alternative music -- with many of the artists and industry execs -- and how the station helped introduce them in America.
