Your favorite debut album

I love debut lp’s, and there were so many good ones in the punk / new wave era. I’m sure we’ve done this topic somewhere in the past, but it’s worth revisiting!

Lately I’ve been going back to Gang of Four’s “entertainment”. I’d never heard anything like that before when it came out. The whole album was cohesive, like a statement of intent. And it is intense!

I’m not even sure I understood all it was saying when I was 14 in 1980... but I knew it was important. It SOUNDED like it was important...both musically and lyrically....not like the journey and foreigner records my friends liked. The album still stands up today. My favorite track changes constantly but right now it’s “I found that essence rare”. That song is positively breakneck.

What’s your favorite debut and why?

99 days out of 100 it would be outlandos d'amour the other day it would be the lexicon of love with honourable mentions for human's lib and duran duran and, partly because i've just been listening to a perfect new recording of an old gig, The Blue Nile's walk across the rooftops.

So many great ones...

Wonderful Life by Black
Play by Play (1st..and only)
This Day & Age by DL Byron
Near Paris by Near Paris
Golden Age of Wireless by Thomas Dolby

... are some of the lesser-known non-mass-market GREAT first albums that are fully solid, not just a hit single and a bunch of filler.

Will add side 1 of With Sympathy by Ministry as well ... mainly to piss off Al Jourgensen ... cause he knows that we know that it’s the best work he’ll ever do

I'll start my favorite debut albums with the Pet Shop Boys' Please.. Next i loved Scritti Politti's Cupids & Psyche '85. His cotton candy voice and banging beats. Soft Cell Non Stop Erotic Cabaret is synth gold to me. Tears for fears' The Hurting enticed my depressed teenage emotions. I also agree with ABC Lexicon of Love, what a perfect album. Howard Jones' Human's Lib is also great. I always loved his super positive attitude. I was 14 at the time an it was an emotional time with all those hormones going on and Howard always made me feel better.. I discovered Bronski Beat's Age of Reason and finally had an outlet to understand why i was such an emotional teen. I loved Erasure's Wonderland, especially the single that introduced me to it, Oh L'Amour.. Later in College I would play Anything Box Peace and people would bang on my door wanting to know what i was playing. I was glad to share that great album with others. I also discovered the Smith's debut album in college too.. About 5 years after it came out. Honorable mention to Grace Jones' Nightclubbing, which i embarrassingly listened to many times.

Lots of good ones listed—

Wasproxy, I can’t agree more about ‘with sympathy’. Al, just own it and stop being so whiney about denying its existence, for God’s sake!!

And freshy... ‘Cupid and psyche’ is actually Scritti’s second album.. but that’s just nitpicking. It’s so different from their first album that it really feels like a debut.
I love that record. Every time I hear songs like Wood Beez or Absolute I’m instantly transported to 1985, when life was slot simpler. Sonically that thing is a thrill, like an amusement park ride.

Throw The Warped Wheel Out by Fiction Factory, one of my favourite albums ever, lots of good songs, no filler. Standout tracks: Feels Like Heaven, Panic,All Or Nothing, Ghost Of Love, The First Step and The Warped Wheel.

Naïve Art by Red Flag, the original LP is just synthpop at its best, only killers on this album. Standout tracks: If I Ever, Russian Radio, Give Me Your Hand, I Don't Know Why and Broken Heart.

Script Of The Bridge by The Chameleons, one of my favourite post punk albums. Really cohesive album. Standout tracks: Here Today, Second Skin, Thursday's Child and View Over The Hill
