Make CD-R in Itunes: volume control

Postby manekineko » Sun Sep 25, 2005 1:51 am

I'm making a compilation CD in Itunes and there is variance in the volume level of some of the original song files. Some songs are way too loud and others are way too soft. I have adjusted the volume level of individual songs by going to "get info", then "options". This does indeed change the volume when I play the playlist on the computer, so there is pretty even volume from song to song. Problem solved, or so I thought.

The problem is that this does NOT change the volume of the offending songs when I burn the playlist to CD. The CD plays with wildly different volumes from song to song, as if I never twiddled with the volume at all. I'm confused. Why wouldn't the adjustments transfer over to the CD? If I can't fix the problem, I will have to omit the worst offenders from the mix, which will upset the flow of the compilation.

I'm eager to finish these CD-R's so I can send out my next round of CDs in the mix exchange. Any suggestions?

iTunes volume controls don't translate to the AIFFs that they eventually become - they stay residing in itunes.plist file. There's two things you can do. The first is simply to use "Sound Check" in your iTunes preferences. This isn't that great - ameliora

I'm glad you asked this Manekineko - it's a problem I have all the time too.
I use Music Match - I apply volume leveling in the audio preferences - but it only works marginally & I'm convinced that the quality of the song deteriorates.

Thanks, Blir. I've tried using the sound check function, but it reduces the sound quality. I'll look into your other suggestions.

just noticed this...I use a freebie called Audacity and it works great...it has stereo db level controls and a graphical interface. You can go through each of your tracks and set the db levels of each...

Audacity is a useful program, but it would be painful to have to volume adjust all your tracks individually. I'll second Blir's recommendation for Roxio. The automatic global volume normalization seems to work pretty well without affecting the sound qua

yeah scram, that was my thinking...the Roxio suite is pretty expensive...I've got another prog laying around called 'all in one' or something like that I got but never used. I think it was supposed to batch set levels, though I'm not quite sure how it wou

Hey Blir, does Toast & Jam let you do beat and tempo matching as well as set up marker points (where the track fades in and out)? I use a program called EZ-Mixer but they never upgraded it past OS 9.2. I tried running it in Classic on OS X but it lags and

I can't recall if the latest Jam does beat-matching. It's likely - look on the Roxio site. But it's definately very good about the cross fades and where, how gradual or how rapid you want them.

I use a free download called MP3Gain. You can apply volume gain to your mp3's in quite large batches (I've done over 1,000 mp3's in a batch before), and it's super-easy to use. Here's the link:
