Stay (The Second Time Around) [Solved]

Stay (The Second Time Around) [Solved]

Postby tha_farfetch » Fri Apr 02, 2004 4:55 am

I was wondering: Did anyone finally identified this song that was posted here a couple of years ago ?

FarFetch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71e_R5nR7FU

Lyrics are:
Talking to a blue sky
Thinking on a roof top
Listen to my heart go, "Don't go, don't go"
Listen to my mind go

Stay the second time around
Won't you please stay the second time around
Darling, won't you please stay the second time around
Oh, won't you stay the second time around

I've been hoping for an answer for this song for about 2 years -- it's a great song. I can't believe nobody has recognized it yet. Maybe someday...

best,

I did a little sleuthing on MusicStack.com and found one possibility: Romance At Eleven - "Stay" (1986). They were a Toronto-based rock band, but I have no idea if CFNY ever played it or if that clip originated from Europe. Anybody up north ever heard this band?

The style and production of the mystery clip fits in the '85-'88 period and reminds me a lot of Chris Rea.

Mike:

I live in Toronto, and listened to 'NY from 80 to 90 religiously, and I can honestly tell you that I never heard that song on the station. It is the type of song that would have fit the station's profile in the first half of the 80's. Like you, I'd really like to know who this is as well. I've found a copy of the Romance at Eleven song, I'll order it and let you know if it's the one.

regards,

david

I did a Google search for "Romance at Eleven" and found Walter Rossi's site
http://www.walterrossi.net/disc2.htm
1987-88 Recorded and produced 4th Louise Portal album Louise Portal (Disque Traffic)
PARTICIPATION (Arranger - producer - writer)
Produced Toronto Rock Group Romance at Eleven album Unidisc Records.

so I emailed Walter and asked:
> Several people are trying to determine if this song clip is the song "Stay" by Romance at Eleven.
> Is it possible for you to confirm if this is the song "Stay" by Romance at Eleven.

Walter Rossi responded:
Hello Dan,
Yes, the song Stay was recorded by Romance at 11...Meanwhile there are lots of songs with the same title.
Good luck...thanks for writing..
Walter Rossi.

Of course that does not technically answer the question "is the song clip the song Stay by Romance at Eleven" -- so I emailed Walter again and asked him the follow-up question:
So is this song clip: http://spiritofradio.ca/SongSearch/220.mp3 the song "Stay" by Romance at Eleven?

He has not responded to the follow-up, though I do appreciate his response to the first email (it seems as if he is saying it's the same song).

-----

Also in the Google search I found this site http://dev.coolforever.com/m/browse.cfm/item/10120/

So I emailed the site owner with the same question and here is the response I received today:

Hi Dan, it's probably the right band as it's definitely a Canadian group (it has the "MAPL" logo on the label) -- songwriting credit is M. Christiano and it was produced by Walter Rossi in 1986.

Update... just sold it to someone in Ontario!

Hope this helps!
best regards
Kevin Lee c/o
Laurie Mercer
----

So there you go -- seems like Mike is on the right track. I was just hoping for total confirmation on the question (which does not seem very difficult if you are familiar with the band and the song, one listen should verify the question)

-- and I hope David is the one that ordered the record and we will get confirmation that this is the song Stay by Romance at Eleven.

Hi guys,

I sent the song to Roberta at www.finylvinylrecords.com and she said it is not by Romance At Eleven.

-----------------------------------------------------
Hi:
Unfortunately, this is not the same song at all. Thanks for trying...

Cheers!

I guess the best we can hope for -- other than another obscurity guru happening upon this snippet -- is that this song was released as a single with "Stay" in the title somewhere. Since this originated on De Dini Devil's site in Germany, I suspect it's a European/UK artist.

Another possibility that I came across is Canton - "Stay With Me" (1986). It's a Stock-Aitken-Waterman production and likely an Italo-disco track, but I wanted to see if anyone has heard this song. They also had another single called "Please Don't Stay", which could also feasibly qualify.

I emailed Roberta at www.finylvinylrecords.com asking if she had listened to the actual record and the song clip, for a final confirmation -- here is her response:

"I have a copy of Stay by Romance At Eleven. In no way does it resemble the song clip that was sent. Sorry, but I actually listened to both & they're different songs.

Roberta"

So we can rule out Romance at Eleven for the song clip.

I did a search of the AMG All Music Guide site for songs with the word Stay in it (there were 633 listed)
http://www.allmusic.com

After looking through the list, it seems there are 2 possibilities -- has anyone heard of either version of "Stay" by Grace Pool or The Blue Nile?

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... duak3kgm3c
Grace Pool
"It's telling that the best song on Grace Pool's self-titled debut album is one that they didn't write. An upbeat cover of "Stay," originally recorded by the Blue Nile, Other than the remake of "Stay," Grace Pool is audio wallpaper."

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... |BLUE|NILE
The Blue Nile
"The Scottish folk-ambient band the Blue Nile has enjoyed a mystique contrived by its inaccessibility and the infrequency of its recordings, but it has also made a series of critically acclaimed discs."

I just found a Blue Nile web site with Lyrics
http://www.psiron.demon.co.uk/lyrics_rooftops.htm
So we can rule out The Blue Nile - Stay

Dan:

What about contacting Rene at De Dini Devil on the chance he has more info on this song. If memory serves, this song was one of the first posted in his unknown song/artist section. It sometimes takes a while for him to update info on the songs in the unknown section, especially since he has stopped allowing d/l's from his site.

Hi David,

I Sent Rene an e-mail and Just received this response from him.

------------------------------------------------

Hi Paul,

thanks for your mail. It's right that I don't update all details of my site
as usual as in the past (working & studying take a lot of time). On the
other hand I don't have any new information on that. It's definetly
broadcast by a German radio station but I can't say which station cos I
don't know the exact year (if it's 1984 it's probably "Hessen 3" and if it's
1986 it's probably "NDR 1"). The problem with the year is that I re-recorded
part of audio tapes later. The tape which include "Stay" has material
certainly from 1984 and other material certainly from 1986. The track is
exactly between tracks I can track down the year so for this track both
years may be right (but it can't be 1985). According to the style and type
of music I prefer 1986. Is it a German singer? Do you hear any accent? Till
late 80's most German singers are recognized outside Germany as German
singers cos it's just a second language you begin to learn when you are 11
years old. From the late 80's German music gets out of this "amateur
section".

You may add this information on the message board.

Ciao René

Hi Paul:

Good to hear from you again. Well, it was worth a try to contact Rene. BTW, I've been able to locate a couple of copies of "Call Me Lucky", as well as a copy of "The Drowning Man". This song however, looks as though it will not be solved anytime soon.

regards,

david
