quote: Maybe it's nothing more complex than PayPal-ing you a few bucks (or mailing you a blank DVD-R in a postage-paid return bubble-pak) and having you dupe the disc, lable it as yours, and send it back to the requestor...all under a gentleman's agreement that it won't be duped again by the recipient. I'd go along with that, for sure. But if you really would like some reciprocal content, I'll have to see what I can muster (but I don't think it's going to be much).
First of all I am only speaking for myself although I agree quite a bit with Skygeex on what he said about him “wishing it wasn’t such a contest”, etc, etc. Secondly, I’m as straight as an arrow but I know I can be a sentimental fool about certain things and what MykeC has (the collection of tapes from KROQ in the 80’s) is just an object to him to collect much like a vintage car. So, in a way, he has no true emotional attachment other than possessing something that very few have but many would want. As he admitted himself, he had never heard of KROQ until 1990. Me on the other hand, (and of course most of you guys) grew up listening to all of these DJs and I even got the chance to see some of them in person. As Riff said, these are “audio snapshots” of time. So in a way, these “snippets” of KROQ are priceless to me because it takes me back in time exactly like a picture or a home movie. I don’t give a hoot where or from who they come from I'm just immensely appreciate those who have shared them with all of us (Roqqer, Frisky99, Riff, Motnow – hope I didn’t leave anybody out).
When I was in my teens and twenties I was a roadie of sorts – most of my friends were in bands and I’m not trying to brag, but I think I have a pretty good ear for music and anyways I cut and paste some of the stuff that you guys have shared and then using my own music collection I make CDs (w/booklets that have graphics & song-lists, etc.) and give them to friends and coworkers so that they get to know my “era” cuz I really feel sad about the crap that’s out there today (Rap, Hip-Hop, etc.) which has no melody and much less any creativity. I’m sure George Harrison would be turning over in his grave if he only knew the kind of blatant rip-offs are allowed nowadays. (For those who don’t know, exBeatle Harrison once got successfully sued for his song My Sweet Lord because they said it sounded like the early 60’s song He’s So Fine.) An example, to this day I still can’t fathom how Vanilla Ice got away with Ice, Ice Baby which was an unquestionable rip off from the Bowie/Queen song Under Pressure – and that’s only one example I hear this all the time.
Anyway, I respect the painstaking work that MykeC has done in “cleaning up” these tapes (I still can’t get Bias Sound Soap to work right- in cleaning up my audio) he’s been given and I hope he changes his point of view so that others may enjoy these “audio snapshots” that mean so much to some. I mean I get such a kick out of listening to Jack Webb from Dragnet start saying “How long have you been shaving…those sideburns come off boy you understand…” as the song “Sping In Fialta by Slow Children comes on. It’s just classic.
