Teach me About The New Wave Band "The Models"

Postby DJ Phoenix » Tue Nov 08, 2011 10:36 am

Anyone have any info on these guys? They were founded by a guy named Sean Kelly, and were supposedly one of the pioneers of "new wave"? What do they sound like? is it worth picking up their GH/BO for a listen?

Actually Martha Davis founded them and they had a few hits like Only The Lonely and Suddenly Last Summer. They were just ok IMHO but I would pick up their entire catalog if I were you. You can read more about them on Wikipedia or just google them.

I think he was asking about the Australian band Models, not The Motels.

Models were pretty big in Australia. As for world wide appeal and influence.. I'd assumed it was minimal.. but I could be wrong.

There was a punk band in the late 70's called the Models that had Marco Pironni (later of Adam Ant fame) - I've got a 45 by them. They were one of many short-lived bands.

There was also a band called the Models (circa say 1986)which had a song 'out of mind out of sight', which you'd see on MTV here in the US every now and then. This is around the same time period that the Rainmakers came out with "let my people go go go". (No connection in the two bands, but I just remember them both being out around the same time).

They were NOT new wave pioneers!

Actually, despite Out of Mind Out of Sight being the only attention the Models got stateside, they were recording albums as early as 1980--stuff that was much more new wave and alternative than the brit pop sound of the Out of Mind Out of Sight era...

I'll take your word for it! Never saw any of their earlier releases in the musty American vinyl bins I go through. I always pegged them as one of the many mid-80s one-offs.

Something tells me there were probably other bands out there called the Models as well...

(They were huge in Australia, and quite prolific - i think this is the band everyone is thinking of). They were influencial in Australia and some of their early work could be classed as new wave.

I always thought they sounded like INXS in some respects but never broke it big in the USA because of the similarities and they started to play them late in the game on the airways around 85-86

My favourite album of theirs is The Pleasure Of Your Company. Big beats, Nik Launay production. "piggy in the middle"

Tracks like "I Hear Motion" & "Hold On" were great tracks.
They were definately early New Wavers in Australia.

They were the openers for OMD's 1986 tour and were SUPER loud. But very good. Lead singer is dead now.

I dreamt a piece of "Hold On" a few months ago and spent a couple weeks trying to figure out what it was. Finally, someone online reminded me what it was. Prior to that, I had never paid the song much attention, but now it is a favorite. I really like "Romantic Atlantic" and their cover of "Telstar" as well.
