Songs about Tokyo/Japan

Postby Surly » Fri Feb 03, 2006 6:13 am

I'm building a playlist on my iPod for my upcoming trip to Tokyo, and I'm looking for suggestions. Here's what I have so far:

Classix Nouveaux - "Tokyo"
A Flock Of Seagulls - "Tokyo"
Bruce Cockburn - "Tokyo"
Thompson Twins - "Tokyo"
Elvis Costello - "Tokyo Storm Warning"
Bryan Ferry - "Tokyo Joe"
Sonic Youth - "Tokyo Eye"
The Vapors - "Turning Japanese"
Kraftwerk - "Dentaku"
Alphaville - "Big In Japan"
Japan - "Life In Tokyo"
Tom Waits - "Big In Japan"
Aneka - "Japanese Boy"
Nick Lowe - "Gai-Gin Man"
Be Bop Deluxe - "Japan"
David Bowie - "Crystal Japan" and "It's No Game (Part 1)"
Ultravox - "Western Promise" and "Hiroshima Mon Amour"
Pere Ubu - "30 Seconds Over Tokyo"
Graham Parker - "Discovering Japan"
The Tubes - "Sushi Girl"
The Cure - "The Walk" ("...I saw you look like a Japanese baby...")

Any suggestions? Trying to keep it new wave/indie/alternative.

Great list! Last year I made a compilation of songs about Japan and China and I used many of the songs on your list. Other songs to include:

The following three songs all have the instrumental surf-music sound with oriental elements:
The Raybeats - B-Gas Rickshaw
Los Straitjackets - Tsunami
The Neptunas - Hai Karate

And these about samurai:
Oingo Boingo - Reptiles and Samurai
Pet Shop Boys - The Samurai in Autumn

Also on my compilation I included Japanese groups: Pizzicato Five, Shonen Knife, The 5,6,7,8's, and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant.

What are your plans for Tokyo? I used to live in a Tokyo suburb and I miss it terribly! Where are you planning to go? Have you been there before?

I recall a song called "Tokyo Rose". But I don't remember much about it.

Well, if I'm going to go that route, I might as well put in "Enola Gay" by OMD as well!

I've never been there before. Staying in Yokohama; going to travel all over Tokyo, and also to Mt. Fuji. I'll also be doing lots and lots of CD/record shopping!!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone...
