Ok! I’ve uploaded a folder of 10 songs. It’s called Obscure Rare Disco. I’ll add a new folder every week or two.
For 6/19/05:
Baciotti – Black Jack 1979 – Italian track, sounds like a Giorgio Moroder production. Pretty spacey syth tune.
Sylvester/Two Tons of Fun – Blackbird – I included this live cut from Sylvester’s 1979 Living Proof LP because it’s such a phenomenal version of the Beatles song. It’s clear that Sylvester and the girls lived this song & were waiting for their moment to be free. Sylvester has a real special place in my heart
Supremes – Driving Wheel 1975 From the Supremes era without Diana Ross. I don’t see why they needed her in the first place.
Thelma Houston – I’m Here Again – 1978, from her album Devil in Me, real similar to Don’t Leave Me This Way. It features some great orchestral movement and string build-up. This song truly moves!
Donna McGhee – It Ain’t No Big Thing – 1978. This was a great surprise for me. I had never heard of her & this has become one of my favorite songs from the era. Nice chugging mid-tempo groove, interesting voice. I like the synth work, it’s nothing special, but it sticks with you.
Esther Phillips – Last Night Changed it All – 1975. Another surprise, very funky break down, great back-up work. I like the optimism in the song.
Gibson Brothers – Oooooh What a Life 1979. You might be familiar with their song Que Sera Mi Vida. This is a little different, a darker groove. I like it a lot!
Tasha Thomas – Shoot Me 1978. This is perhaps the dirtiest sounding song I’ve ever heard. The late, great Tasha’s husky voice, mixes perfectly with the heavy mid-tempo funk groove.
Sheila B. Devotion – Spacer 1979. This was sampled heavily on Alcazar’s Crying at the Discotech. Excellent song produced by Bernard Edwards & Nile Rogers of Chic fame.
Crown Heights Affair – You Gave Me Love 1978. You may be familiar this as it was used on The Utah Saints great techno song “My Mind Must Me Free.” This is a fun, happy song, excellent call & response chorus, and I love those girls in the background doing whatever that noise is!
