i was wondering if anyone owns the fehlfarben album 'Monarchie und Alltag'. i heard their song ('ein jahr (es geht voran') on 'new wave club class*x volume 1' and love it. if someone owns this album, i'd love to see a review of it.

This is probably THE classic german NW album, either critically acclaimed as well as a big hit with music lovers through the generations, everybody had a tape of it! Released in 1980/81 it finally reached Gold in 2000 for steady sales since then. I remember seeing it in every record store and Woolie at that time. It had been reviewed by a specialist HiFi Magazine for the great sound and received a special sticker on the cover, so maybe they got more promotion. This album features a very energetic guitary/partly jangly sound (without BOF Rock connotations)combined with the often dark, critical lyrics and vocals by Peter Hein or Janie Jones as he was known back then (after a Clash song). The lyrics were very appropriate for the time (at least for me) dealing with obvious teenage alienation but also with the then at least for german young people difficult situation with USA-USSR cold war problems, being dealt with above our heads, feeling powerless, but still wanting to do something, not that much different to today unfortunately. After the fall of the iron curtain at least we here in Europe thought that the future would be much better... But this was undreamt of by Fehlfarben, back then nobody realistically believed in the reunification of Germany or the end of the Cold War. For a detailed history on Fehlfarben (in German) try http://blechluft.onart.com/ This album was voted on the SPEX (THE german alternative music mag since 1980) poll for best record of all time in 1999 on rank 15 between Revolver by The Beatles and Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth, far ahead of Kraftwerk and Blumfeld (If you haven't heard of them and like Fehlfarben, go to your next specialist dealer and BUY ANYTHING, although the early work until 1998 would be recommended, later they became a bit artsy, but still fantastic). Other recommendations would be Palais Schaumburg, Holger Hiller, der Plan, Andreas Dorau, Kosmonautentraum, der moderne Mann.... with different grades of accordance to Fehlfarben, but all great in their time! One of my favorites are Bärchen & die Milchbubis and Die Zimmermänner, but I wouldn't start searching for them outside Germany. If you ever find anything by them please contact me ! Best wishes hunting ! Jörg
