Loved her music and her looks period. She didn't last very long at least over here in the states. But she did have a bunch of hits overseas, like in the UK and everywhere else. She is my second favorite female New Wave artist of all time.I know some of you are going to say that she was never really New Wave, well all I know is that the Trouser Press Guide To New Wave has her in their books.I always looked at Kim as being a New Wave singer.Plus, not very long ago she was on that Here And NOw Tour with other New Wave artists.
To quite a few people Kim has always been looked at as nothing more than an 80's New Wave singer that drew a line in the sand between New Wave and Bubblegum, and when I say Bubblegum I don't mean the 60's style of Bubblegum. What I mean is like the Stock,Aitken Waterman kind of Bubblegum.Along with Kylie Minogue as well.
Well I can see how alot of people put Kylie in that catagory back in the 80's,but nowadays she has more of a New Wave Techno style and sound, and she has really gone past that Stock Aitken Waterman Bubblegum image from the 80's and really has moved on.

| I'm still trying to figure out why "Kids in America"--a great pop song--mentioned East California? I've been to East California, as in Blythe (border of CA and AZ) and there is nothing there but gas stations, a handful of churches, and a lot of dust. Very few kids. They all flee to LA as soon as they finish high school. |

Yeah, Kim Wilde never really got much attention in the USA as a New Wave artist, inspite of the fact that her first 4 albums really are New Wave. Only a few of her albums were even released in the States (Kim Wilde (1981), Teases & Dares (1984), Another Step (1986), and Close(1988)).
Most people here in the US only remember "Kids In America" and the Top 10 pop hit cover of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On". I'm afraid that after the later song was released, the "disposable pop" label stuck with most of the New Wave purists. Ironically it was her biggest commercial success in America.
In later records, Kim wandered through various styles of pop and dance from album to album without much notice in the US. "Close" (1988) is a synth-driven Hi-NRG dance record, complete with a Shep Pettibone remix - a very good album in for its style. "Love Moves" (1990) is more dancable pop. "Love Is" (1992) is more pop/rock. "Now & Forever" (1995) is an soulful R&B record. Although Kim hasn't released a full length CD in almost 10 years, she continues to perform live and work on various non-music interests. She recently appeared in a duet with Germany's Nena in a song entitled "Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime".
For New Wavers, I would recommend "Kim Wilde" (1981), "Select" (1982), and the slick synthpop "Teases & Dares" (1984). Her 3rd album, "Catch As Catch Can" (1983) is the weakest of efforts in my opinion and is difficult to find on CD - frankly I wouldn't bother.
For more info on Kim Wilde, check out her official website kimwilde.com. I was a card-carrying fan club member for a while back in the early 90s and actually have a autographed picture hanging on the wall of my den. |

24 years on and I still swoon over Kim Wilde. The first album and the follow-up, "Select", are 2 very fine pop/new wave albums.
I saw James Stevenson (guitar player on the first album) at the Punk AIde festival in 2001 when he was playing with Chelsea. All thru the set I kept requesting "Kids In America" and he just kept looking at me like I was insane. After the set he came up to me and siad that I was the first person in years to make the Chelsea/Kim Wilde connection. |

I never particularly liked Kim Wilde. To me, she seemed like some kid who was trying to jump onto the New Wave bandwagon, and trying a little too hard at that. I always categorized her with other female singers in the early 80's that were out at the time, like Kim Carnes and Bonnie Tyler. Heck, Pat Benatar was more new wave to me than Kim Carnes; at least Pat did a cover of an Ian Gomm song ("X-Rated").
I have heard that these days, Kim Wilde has a gardening show on UK television. Is this true? Perhaps one of our UK posters might be able to verify? |

Skinnytie, you heard correctly about the gardening show. Kim is quite the little Suzy Homemaker these days; she's also the "Kitchen Diva" for the German-based retailer Tchibo. I guess she's looking to be the next Martha Stewart? D'Oh!!! |

Best song--You'll Never Be So Wrong. Liked her old stuff but recently picked up a greatest hits cd--I've decided anything after 86 is lame. |

Me too! Like they say: "There is no life East of I-5."
Had Kim Wilde even been to America when she wrote that song? Certainly not East California! Seriously, I always wondered what she was thinking when she wrote that song.

| Actually most of Kim Wilde's early songs were written by Marty & Ricki Wilde (her father & brother). Marty Wilde was actually a bit of a pop star himself back in the 50s and 60s. |

I have every 12" and every album from "Kim Wilde" to "Another Step," and I agree that "Select" is a great record. Even "Catch as Catch Can," is kinda New Wavey.
I'm not like "Mr. Obsessed With Kim Wilde Guy;" I just spend a LOT of time in used record stores, and try to locate New Wavers complete discographies. Some of the posters to this board who know me from the Melody remember my crates and crates of records, and even my "vinyl-only" New Wave nights.
It could be worse. I could collect something really awful, like Precious Moments figures. |

| My favorite? "Suburbs of Moscow." Kind of a companion piece to Shona Lang's "Soviet Snow." How I would love to find an MP3 of either song on the Internet... |

| My all-time favorite track by Kim Wilde was actually a 7 minute plus b-side track, great dance song, called 'Lovers On A Beach' which was the flip side on the 12" extended mix of 'The Second Time' - if you have heard 'Lovers On A Beach' you know what I mean, it is just a great song, and IMO, her very best track. |

By request: Suburbs Of Moscow
I have nearly Kim's entire catalog on CD, save a few odd singles, b-sides, and remixes. |

Ollie Stench: I would oblige if I could. Unfortunately, "Bitter Is Better" is one of those less well known early non-album singles that, to the best of my knowledge, has never made it to CD.
I do have it's b-side, "Boys", which has appeared on several import hits collections. |

Awful. Just awful.
I'd like to get "Bitter is Better" too, and "Boys." I have only a wretched 22 year old cassette copy. |

Four words: not in my area. I don't watch TV, so I refuse to pay $90 a month for a cable modem. DSL hasn't come to where I live yet. |

Hmmm, interesting. I didn't know about this Japanese hits collection. There are so many different ones with almost the same songs on them. |
