Does anyone remember them? Circa 1988? Their cover of Holly And The Italians' "Tell That Girl To Shut Up"? I had their three albums on tape. They never crossed over to the U.S. and they called it quits in 1991. From what I remember, lead singer Wendy James made a few remarks in the British press about winning an oscar one day and they turned on her. She made a solo record with Elvis Costello writing all the material (and it's good!) and then she dropped out of sight.

| Wonderful band. "Sister Moon", "I Just Wanna Be With You", "Baby, I Don't Care". Embracing the Manchester sound as they spun into oblivion. |

I actually still have those albums (on cassette anyway) and I thought for sure that the Vamp's ersatz bubblegum/synth-rock sound would catch on in the U.S. Too bad about 'em. Although two of the guys went on to have some success with Bush (the band, not G.W.)

| I was not aware of the connection to Bush. That's pretty cool. The late 80s were a great era for woman-fronted Brit-pop: the Darling Buds, the Primitives, TVV, etc. |

I thought I was the only person in the world to buy Wendy James" solo c.d. I thought the whole thing was great. I love her voice and you can tell Coctello had a hand in it. Good one Ghosty! I always thought she was the singer in lets active. Guess I was wrong. |

I was happy to hear someone else heard of it! How about the song I wanna live forever? I think it was great. I really liked the whole cd. I bet if it came out a few years earlier it would have done better. While we are comparing stuff, do you remember Electronic? It had great people in the group but I think only 2 songs ever made it. |

Yeah, Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr were Electronic for the "Get the Message" single and then somewhere in there Neil Tennant joined in for the song "Dissapointed" from the Cool World soundtrack. I know there was one album. There may have been a second.
Wendy James moved to NYC and I think she married. Drat!
Apparantly she wrote Elvis Costello a letter and asked him to write her entire solo album...and amazingly he did! |

And what a great voice! Thats it, I'm going looking on the web for some Transvision vamp. |
