Were there any Japanese New Wave?
I am sure there were, but they escape me right now....But what were some of the Japanese New Wave acts? I would like to track some down.

I am a fan of Shibuya-Kei (Jpop) music and would like to see some of the corrilations between the two genres. Maybe how some acts in the 80s influence the Shibuya-Kei acts in the 90's.

'YMO' or 'Yellow Magic Orchestra' were huge in Japan. It is said that they were the first western sounding Japanese band and were often compared to the mighty 'Kraftwerk' in their music style. The main keyboard player was a man by the name of 'Ryuichi Sakamoto' who some may recall worked with 'David Sylvian' on the soundtrack to the film 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' plus many other projects since. 'YMO' released over a dozens albums between 1978 and 1985 and another when they reformed briefly in 1993. The best album is 'Characters : The Best Of ...' and 'Naughty Boys'.

'The Plastics' were a Tokyo based mixed gender Quintet formed in 1979 and split in 1985 and sounded not unlike 'Devo' so i've read. 1 album was pressed in America and England in the form of a best of but more were available in Japan it seems.

That's all I have on Japan new wave at the moment. If you want any other information then ask or email me.

Yellow Magic Orchestra was a great band. If you like New Wave, they're an essentail addition. In many ways they were way ahead of their time.

I have seen Ryuichi Sakamoto turn up in a few compilation ablums ranging from Jazz to Brazillian.
I should definately check out that YMO...

I shall head over to my used cd shop and seen if they have anything... they have a huge vinyl dedicated basement.

The Plastics recorded at the same studio (Island) in the Bahamas as the B52's ,in fact I have a few promo pictures of them together. They did a cool remake of the Monkees the "last train to Clarksville" They had 3 releases altogether.Ryuichi Sakamoto ,Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi were the Original YMO Bill Nelson ,David Sylvian were both frequent guests on numerous of there releases as solo act independantly as well as on main group releases.Ryuichi "Left Handed Dream had Robin Scott,Brigit Nowack of "M" fame and Adrian Belew.Masami Tsuchiya was the Guitarist for Ippu du and had alot of Japan members gueat apear on his "Rice Music" album Excellent!!While Ryuichi did have Thomas Dolby and Bootsy Collins appear on "Musical Encyclopoedia" His main focus lately has been soundtrack which he has won alot of critical acclaim for. Haruomi is more into atmospheric but melodic instrumentation but is really Diverse.Bill Nelson actually Married Yukihiro Takahashi's ex wife and has worked with the Sadistic Huma Band. All three have appeared with Sylvian one way or another over the years Starting with Japans "Tin Drum"The Pizzicato 5 and Towa Tei are a couple more recently that's picked up where the others left off, however Pizzicato 5 are now broke up.and Towa was originaly with Dee-lite a kind of new wave of the early ninetees.

Consider the dafodil, and while you're doing that. I'll be over her going through your stuff.

Does anyone know the Japanese 80s-synthpop band "HIKASHU"?
I like it a lot. They've been and still are quite popular.
They made a cover version of KRAFTWERK's "das Model".

Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) was the coolest Japanese synth band of all times. Extremely underrated for what they composed and the time at which they composed the songs. They were really ahead of their time. Their best songs included Rydeen, Technopolis, Multiplies, Behind The Mask, Ballet, and Solid State Survivor. From YMO came a bunch of Japanese bands that were heavily influenced by their sound.

There was another band from Japan that doesn't get mentioned a lot which sounds at times like Depeche Mode or Camouflage. I'm not kidding with the comparison. The band's name is SOFT BALLET. I think the reason they never got any attention was they sung all their songs in Japanese. If they would have tried to do an English album, I'm sure that would have caught people's ears.

One of my favorite 77 japanese band from 1977 is a one of the first japanese Punk band called Anarchy they realeased 3 or 5 Lp's in the first or the second Lp' The band covered covered in japanese the clash the name of the track is " tokio burning " and " suspect device " by stiff little fingers

On stage the band almost played dressed totally in mao chinese uniforms , thats really shocked some japanese nationalists people after a show on a national japanes television chanel

After their tird album like their first influences the english Clash
this band made more reaggae ska tracks but its good too

Another great band that's im discovered one track on a powerpearl compilation is Badge this is the first japanese Mod's power pop band the bands have existed from 82 to 85 and have realesed all this records who are actively researched by collectors worlwide

Can't forget about Masami Tsuchiya from "Ippu Du" and Had an album called Rice Music (82'). Includes a Sakamoto performed track, Kafka. also Matsutake, Toshio Nakanishi, Bill Nelson, Percy Jones, Jansen and Karn. Very impressive very hyper. The drums have a Japan sound to them (as to be expected). He seems to be wearing a stewardess outfit on the cover.Very good blend of Arto Lindsy esque squelchy guitars and Japan.

I've got a friend visiting Japan right now and he's under orders to bring me back all the Plastics vinyl he can carry, lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that "I Love You, Ono" by Stereo Total is a cover of a Plastics song.

???

Also check out Polysics, three piece Japanese group OBSESSED with Devo.

Les Rita Mitsouko was a French group, who had a few hits in Europe, including "La Jalousie" and "Marcia Baila". I have "Marcia Baila" on an import compilation - not a bad song at all.

Logic System: (Hideki Matsutake & Ryo Kawakami)

I got my hands on an original japanese release of Logic System's "Logic" LP in 1983 or so, and I've been looking for my own copy ever since. The easiest song to find on the file sharing networks is "Domino Dance". It could be described as "technopop" or "electronica" - I have never listend to YMO, but I am told it is similar. The rhythms are very irregular and hard to follow but compelling.

They had a second album "Venus" which is said to be "80s LA Synth" sounding, and a third "Orient Express". A "History Of Logic System" CD is also available but all of the releases seem to be very HTF.

I've got both of the Plastics' proper studio albums on CD.

Their third record, "Welcome Back Plastics," consisted of remakes of their songs, aimed more at the American market. I don't have much interest in that one, to be honest. They also put out a live album.

"Top Secret Man" is one of my favorite songs ever, by anyone. Did anybody see the episode of SCTV where they showed the video to this song?

I bought "Hard Copy" which is a cd/dvd of live Plastics (also included is a book), "Welcome Oregato" a 2 cd comp (with unreleased tracks?), and PlasticSexEducation, which I believe is a new recording of them, while I was in Sapporo. I am now in Narita airport, so I haven't had a chance to check these items out yet.

Japanese pop has a smooth polished sound often influenced by America. They have popular music just like us, pop charts just like us and loads of great melodies. The best period late 60s to early 80s, but even now they do the odd great song. Some may be New Wave, some may be US pop style, some disco, some beat, some ballad....but in the end New Wave was full of variety anyway (just look at British music). All that really matters is they have done great melodies. The Yellow Magic Orchestra and the few others mentioned here barely scrape the surface.

I LOVE Yellow Magic Orchestra and Sakamoto.

Around 1981/1982 I remember seeing a Japanese band called Earthling at the old Peppermint Lounge. They were really good ...

They asked my friend and I to be in their video. We had to stand outside of the Peppermint Lounge and cheer for them as they walked in.

I wish I could remember who they warmed up for ...

The Plastics and YMO are great. I liked Frank Chickens too. Used to have an LP by them, but my memories of it are fading.

Elsewhere I mentioned Polysics who are a great current Japanese band heavy on the NW (Devo in particular) influence. Also cool are Spoozys. Similar to Polysics but poppier, less frenetic. Maybe a bit more synth-heavy too.

I am a big fan of early Boredoms stuff and there are two similar bands that mined a little closer to NW territory: Space Streakings and UFO Or Die.

Someone way back on this thread mentioned Buffalo Daughter. I've always wanted to check them out. What do they sound like?

Oh yeah-- NW fans should give 00I00 a listen. It's one of the members of Boredoms and it's quite synthy and cool.

For cool weird japanese new wave esque try the Doopies. They were the brainchild of Japanese eccentic experimentalist Yann Tomita, who used to be in the group Melon.
They record all over the place, full of wild samples and chipmunk like female vocals. It might be a bit much for the pop purists on the list, but for those with adventurous taste, it's well worth checking out. The title track is comprised of samples from the theme's of "I Love Lucy" and "I Dream Of Jeannie." "Love Songs Is A Very Razor Bladed Thing" splices countless snippets of love songs, before settling into a monologue about love songs over a loop of the drums from the Yardbirds "For Your Love." Fun, wild stuff.
