Stuart Adamson / Big Country

Inquiries and discussions about new wave artists and what happened to them.

Stuart Adamson / Big Country

Postby drsevrin » Thu Oct 25, 2007 5:48 pm

The suicide of Stuart Adamson in 2001 has had a lingering effect on me that I can't quite shake. I think it's truly one of the greatest tragedies of New Wave that he apparently, ultimately succumbed to his demons in the face of so much promise and talent. I've been haunted by it for years.

What affects me the most is thinking about his children. In trying to understand what the future has in store for them I ran across an article in The Scotsman that mentioned his second wife may get the entirety of his estate - leaving virtually nothing to his kids. This may well be old news, but I'm curious if anyone has tracked this issue and knows where things ended out with his estate. Did his children get at least something? I would hate to think that my kids would get nothing of my estate if I died. Has anyone else been deeply bothered by his loss? Big Country was a fantastic band that deserved to carry on just a bit longer. [V]

I don't know about the estate issues (didn't even know he had kids), but I agree the the loss of Stuart was huge. I saw them on The Crossing tour in 1983, and bought everything they put out - including the posthumous releases on their website.

Stuart clearly cared about his music, and was also an amazing guitar player.

I'd forgotten I posted this last year. I've been working my way through all the live Big Country material I can possibly find, both audio and video, and I have to say I'm more bothered than ever by Stuart Adamson's suicide. I still can't come to grips with what may have motivated someone who had such a legacy of success, a loving fan base, and children to take his own life. Perhaps it was the breaking with his second wife. Perhaps it was alcohol-induced depression, I have no idea. It just makes no sense to me.

Any BC fans out there who have any thoughts on this?

I thought of this thread last night while buying punkins for Halloween at Pavillions/Vons because they were playing "Fields of Fire" in the mix of tunes for shopping... [:D]

Wow, didn't know he died. Just today, I was at the store, eyeing a copy of the Big Country singles vol 1 boxset, debating on whether to buy it or not.

Ironic that he committed suicide, seeing as his line was, "Feed the people. Stay alive."
