I love "Say It Ain't So", "El Scorcho" and "Hash Pipe" but beyond that I could live without them.

Ten each, more rockish vs. more electronic...

Radiohead
Beck
The Smashing Pumpkins
Catherine Wheel
Garbage
My Bloody Valentine
Blur
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Bush

Coldcut
Orbital
David Holmes
everything but the girl
Massive Attack
Underworld
Chemical Brothers
LTJ Bukem
Chicane
Saint Etienne

Kinda schizophrenic maybe.

I was more into labels than groups in the 90s but ...

R&S Records (1992, especially, but 1991 + 1993 were pretty good too)
Eye Q/Harthouse Axis (1993 mostly, but 1992 + 1994 had its moments)
MFS (1992, 1993 were probably their best years)

other highlights ...
808 State (first half of their career)
Orbital (not so much their third album)
(both of whom I appreciate more now than when it was new)

BTW, You have to respect Orbital for bowing out when they did. Their sound was getting stagnant and it's nice to see someone not trying to milk it for all they can get (unlike certain 80s artists).

Some of my favorites of the nineties:

Blur
Suede
Elastica
Shampoo
Morphine
Flaming Lips
Super Cat
Radiohead
Utah Saints
Reverend Horton Heat
Beck
Weezer

My list, I suppose, is pretty much along the same lines as Motors and Mechi. With the exception of Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, both of which I really hated.

The notion of recording artists "milking it for all they can get" can be at least slightly troubling. Fortunately we can intelligently discern which ones from the eighties are doing so and which ones are'nt. I do find however, that most of the artists that emerged in the eighties and that are currently releasing new material are at the top of their craft.

Nineties favs, off the top of my head:
Smashing Pumpkins
Weezer
Chemical Brothers
Fatboy Slim
Daft Punk
Frente!
Jane's Addiction
Saint Etienne
Dubstar
Basement Jaxx
808 State
Orbital
Orb
Bjork

I do not like Frente! and do not know why, could it be because they covered BLT and I did not like their version.
I do like Orgy and their cover of Blue Monday. [;)]

So what exactly was their story? I thought 2004's Blue was a pretty good album. Did they really bow out from magnanimous virtue or because Britain seems consumed in a wave of guitar pop again? It's only been about a year and a half. I wouldn't be surprised to see them return half a decade later when the tide swings back.

As for the 80s hangers-on, I kinda know what you're saying, but to me, they're all like old lovers. Yeah, the relationship might not be as fresh as it used to be, some of the heat is gone, there's plenty of wrinkles, we complain and bicker and know we're inevitably spiraling downward. But fuck it! I'm gonna enjoy the last hurrahs as long as I can. Echo & the Bunnymen, Heaven 17, New Order (surprise!), D-Mode, Kraftwerk, Morrissey...they've all released good, fun material the last couple of years. I still enjoy getting jacked up for them as well as the new bands.

I was very into the shoegazer stuff like Curve. I still listen to the Dopplegander cd all the time.
I loved The Catherine Wheel a lot too.

Beyond that, I think Hole & the Innocence Mission are the only ones I really got into. I must have listened to the Live Through This cd non-stop for a couple of months. I was so disappointed by Hole's follow-up, although "Playing Your Song" is one of my favorite songs of all time, period.

I was mostly into techno through the early 90's - Moby, Praga Kahn, anything on the Antler Subway label, all those Belgian one-shot groups.
I got into Euro and House in the mid nighties - no one in particular stands out, it was mostly songs that I liked rather than performers.
