Top Ten 1 Hit Wonders

Discuss your favorite songs, artists or post your top ten lists from the new wave era or related genres.

a one hit wonder SHOULD BE defined as an artist who only had 1 hit in total in the whole of the charts.

Artists like Adam Ant and Thomas Dolby who only had 1 top 40 hit in America, had a bunch of other minor hits that many don't remember simply because they didn't make the top 40, so they get branded as a one hit wonder [:(!]

The best songs are the ones that don't become big hits in the charts [:)]

<br>I tend to consider one-hit wonders artists who were mainly known for just one song, never mind if they were a number on somebody's chart within a "top forty" or who-gives-a-crap top 50 or top 10,000 context. For this reason many, many New Wave artists can fit this description, but I'll name a few.

"Cars" by Gary Numan. Sorry Numan fans but he never equalled this one, or even came close.

"The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. Not one of my favorites but other than "Antarctica" I don't recall any other song of theirs of significance.[/quote]
Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The Word -- pretty good song that people know.

Gary Numan - Metal, Down in the Park, Are Friends' Electric?, Me! I Disconnect From You -- all great songs that many fans know

OK. big pet peeve here - DEVO charted with "Whip It." But, they were the only band to have two (count them) two songs on the Heavy Metal Soundtrack. "Working In A Coal Mine" and "Through Being Cool" were both featured. If you read interviews with todays contemporary bands like The Futureheads, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand and many others you will see that all of them were heavily influenced by DEVO. It's a shame that MTV has Shunned DEVO since the eighties because when MTV started back in 1982, DEVO was one of the only bands that already had a large repotoire of videos ready to go and they were a large staple of the MTV video rotation. I personally have 191 DEVO songs in my Itunes player and that isn't every song they have ever put out. You can't tell me that a band that has been around since the early seventies and is still to this day putting out new material and playing shows is a "One Hit Wonder"

Here is a list of DEVO songs that most of you have heard of (not including Whip it)

1. Freedom Of Choice
2. Jocko Homo (We Are DEVO)
3. Through Being Cool
4. Girl You Want
5. Beautiful World
6. That's Good
7. Satisfaction (I Can't Get No)
8. Peek-a-Boo!
9. Uncontrollable Urge
10. Shout!

DEVO are quite possibly my favorite band. Their first 2 albums especially are mindblowing and the Hardcore Devo collections prove that just about anything that came to be known as punk or new wave or even electronica was prefigured by their early work ca. 1974-1977.

Sorry I've listened to all those songs and I can't find any melody in them. So I guess, we can play some tracks once or twice, like Girl You Want, but it's about all. So I would agree Devo is a one Hit wonder with Whip it which is quite nice.[;)]

Agree wholeheartedly with the above posts about Devo. To call them a one hit wonder is misleading and retarted. Germany had their Kraftwerk, England had Gary Numan, Japan had YMO, and we had Devo. These four acts predated new wave and influenced every decent act afterwards. To label any of them as one hit wonders is f--ked up.
