Let's have some fun. There were times you had to turn the stereo down because of certain words (or subject matter) that could provoke
either your mother or your spouse. List your top 3...

Mine are:

"Peaches" by The Stranglers
"F*cking Ada" by Ian Dury
"Butt-F*ck" by Human Sexual Response

I have on my iPod a list of kinda mellow stuff that I play during parties, etc. (Yes, I'm old and boring enough that I want cocktail music . . . no slam dancing.)

It includes Nouvelle Vague's cover of "Too Drunk to Fuck." Of course, that song inevitably comes on right when there is a lull in the conversation.

All three are current choices by Selfish Cunt: "Fuck the Poor", "Britain is Shit" and "Corporate Slut". Quite catchy actually. [:0]

When I was younger, I would put the headphones on for Why'd Ya Do It from Marianne Faithful.

I wasn't living at home when Karen Finley's Tales of Taboo came out, but I'd be pretty embarrassed if anyone heard me listening to it! It's another low volume or headphones song.

I do recall my mom freaking out about Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby. That seems so incredibly mild by today's standards!

I remember hiding the cassette insert for The Cure's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' when I was in high school because of "The Kiss," "Torture" and "Shiver and Shake." I knew I'd get into trouble over the F-bomb in two of the songs--and while I don't think my parents would have listened close enough to "Torture" to figure out what it's about, I didn't feel comfortable listening to it with them around. [:D]

I also hid my "Shout at the Devil" cassette, too. My sperm donor would have died if he'd seen it.

Punk rock was generally a turn-it-down-target. My pop would get a frowny face and ask lots of questions about some of the punk music/images/lyrics from time to time. It was easier to deal with it by just not playing it when they could hear it.

On the other hand, my parents were also cool in that they knew it was just music. My younger brother got into Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, early Metallica, etc. The imagery, lyrics, and music kind of threw my parents for a loop, but they would just ask questions like "do you know what they are really singing about?" or the like. And they'd see that neither of us turned out to be axe muderers or gov't overthrowers, and they knew it was just music.

There's no problem in playing certain songs in my house... I can put anything on and my mum wouldn't mind.
The only thing is that my mother hates The Cure and Joy Division and generally complains when I put any of them on. [:p]

Mr. KYYX can't cotton to Joy Division. He always says "oh boy, Happy Division" when I play them and jokes around and imitates Ian's voice and gets me giggling for a while until I send him out of the room. I of course don't care, but it confounds him why people listen willingly to their music !
