Your Top 10 Albums of the 90's

Postby SuNomi » Sat Oct 14, 2006 3:17 am

I don't know about you all, but it's been a chilly decade for music thus far. The White Stripes-led Garage rock scene didn't really pan out. Outkast made some decent noise, but not enough to change the tide of bludgeoning ego-rap. So what have we to back to? List your best albums for the last great decade of music, mine are:

1. Radiohead - OK Computer
2. Blur - Parklife!
3. REM - Automatic For The People
4. Paul Weller - Wild Wood
5. Beck - Odelay
6. Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning glory?
7. Nirvana - Nevermind
8. Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining
9. Peter Gabriel - Us
10. U2 - Achtung Baby

Here's ten I still play all the time. A lot of stuff I loved in the 90's I can't stand today (Rage Against The Machine [:I]):

Dinosaur Jr. - Green Mind
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Melvins - Stoner Witch
Coil - Love's Secret Domain
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Sonic Youth - Goo
Pixies - Trompe Le Monde
Rowland S. Howard - Teenage Snuff Film
Hum - Downward Is Heavenward

That doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. It was an outstanding decade for music no matter what anyone says.

Although I disagree about the 00s (there's good nuggets there, just gotta look really hard), this is a brutal choice...

1 - Radiohead - OK Computer
2 - New Order - Republic
3 - The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
4 - Blur - Parklife
5 - Catherine Wheel - Chrome
6 - Orbital - Orbital
7 - Portishead - Dummy
8 - Garbage - Version 2.0
9 - Beck - Odelay
10 - My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

And a lot of honorable mentions that are just a hair behind...

HM - World Party - Goodbye Jumbo
HM - Massive Attack - Blue Lines
HM - everything but the girl - The Language of Life
HM - Charlatans - Some Friendly
HM - Chicane - Far from the Maddening Crowds
HM - Air - Moon Safari
HM - Saint Etienne - Tiger Bay
HM - Happy Mondays - Pills n Thrils n Bellyaches

PS. Motors, almost picked Goo or Dirty, but they're really 4th or 5th in my Sonic Youth stack.

Not really a top ten, but some favourite albums for the year

1990 Shamen: En-tact
1993 Sun Electric: Kitchen
1994 Resistance D: Ztringz of Life
1996 Paul van Dyk: Seven Ways

6 - Orbital - Orbital

You like the first album that much? I always preferred the second one. First one had some of their best tracks (Chime, Belfast, Midnight), but the rest of the album had too much bleeping for me.

Agreed, but Belfast alone, and the fact that it was their first, made it such a defining album for the era, there was no way to leave it off the list.
