Top 10 New Wave Surprises in the 21st Century

Postby Wayne » Sat Apr 12, 2008 6:52 am

1. The B-52s are still making music and still sound pretty much the same.
2. Almost all of The Ramones and Joe Strummer are dead.
3. The question now is not "Is new wave dead?" but "Is rock dead?"
4. No one gives a shit about videos anymore.
5. Tom Robinson is married....to a woman.
6. New Wave/ Alternative radio now plays corporate metal schlock like Rise Against and Metallica.
7. It turns out Michael Stipe is an asshole.
8. New Wave is the new "beautiful music"; in other words, most people who like it are over 40. The kids prefer Flo Rida, Justin Timberlake, and anything "featuring Akon".
9. The lead singer of Romeo Void isn't that much uglier than Debbie Harry now.
10. Cool indie LP's and non-LP-B-sides? No. iTunes and LimeWire? Yes.

Awesome Wayne. I don't think I can be that creative. I'll take an album-oriented tack to it. Albums that the old new wave groups have pleasantly surprised me with this millennium...

New Order - Get Ready
Echo & the Bunnymen - Siberia
The Chameleons - Why Call It Anything?
The Church - Uninvited Like the Clouds
The Finn Brothers - Everyone Is Here
Simple Minds - Black and White 050505
Heaven 17 - Before After
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel
The Cure - The Cure
The B-52's - Funplex!

Honorable mentions:

Mission of Burma - OnOffOn
The Fixx - Want That Life
Morrissey - You Are the Quarry
New Order - Waiting for the Sirens Call
