Urgh Field Trip Report:

Well, Schwenko and I were indeed the only ones who made it this screening (NWO meet and greet? Been there!). Schenko's every bit as cool as he seems on this forum...although the enormous bulge in his pants had me QUITE intimidated. We considered going to Arlene's Grocery afterwards for punk rock karaoke just a few blocks away, but that might be on a different night and we both forgot our Geritol anyway.

First, I gotta say how blown away I was by the vitality and originality of these bands. I almost forgot what made the era so great. Nobody was telling these guys what they should be doing with their music or how it sounded like something else. I highly recommend catching this video somehow.

By far and away, Klaus Nomi freakin' blew me away! Am I an idiot for not knowing that he also sang the high operatic chorus parts of "Total Eclipse"? The crowd went NUTS over that. Some were certainly laughing because he was way OUT there, but many were grinning and shaking their heads in disbelief at his stage persona. Put him on a double bill with Gary Numan and my head would explode! Speaking of Numan, he brought the house down, singing while scooting back and forth on a small car-like electric chair...a trip!

I loved seeing "the kids" in the audience repeatedly making the "I had no idea..." comment about several of the bands, even what we think of as pretty mainstream like Echo and the Bunnymen. I even remembered what made the Police so great in their early days - old Police was just so fresh and energetic.

Other highlights:
The Cramps - insane!
OMD's Enola Gay - they were just a breath away from Kraftwerk at the time
Wall of Voodoo - could Stan stay in character or what?
Echo - Ian Mcullogh (sp?) was a genius
Gang of Four - is it totally trite to call them seminal?
XTC - Andy had serious stage presence back then!

Some lowlights:
Pere Ubu's Birdies - terrible song choice and weak stage presence, bummer since I was really looking forward to them
No Surf Punks in our print
Skafish's Sign of the Cross - way too smug, some bands might deserve oblivion

Now I need to find something just as fun for my west cost visit the 2nd week of October. Suggestions?

The person who seems to have been behind the screening of Urgh has also put together a couple of tribute concerts to the film this weekend in NYC.

Here is a review of the 7PM showing (myirwin and I were at the 10 PM show);

"Went to the 7:00 screening last night. A great crowd, just about sold
out. The host introduced a member of Skafish before the film who was
in the audience. Unfortunately this version of URGH! did not include
"Sign of the Cross". You had to feel bad for the guy. The old film
held up fairly well...a bit out of focus at times, a few sound drops,
but these flaws did not detract from the experience. Way better than
seeing the video on tv. Many subtle details were visible - my
favorite being Gary Newman. He's working so hard at looking P.O.'d
driving around in his little car. At the end of the song when he is
backing the car up you can see his head remaining fixed forward, but
his eyes are darting side to side making sure he doesn't back into
anything. Awesome.

A couple other songs were missing...The Members, Pere Ubu."

I've got a pre-recorded tape of Urgh with all the bands included. If I can dig it out of storage I'll see about making DVDs available. Unless A&M is planning on releasing it. Which I doubt.
