At Cafe du Nord tonight 9/28. Yours free if anyone can make it. Drop me a line thru the site's emailer. Friend's wife had the nerve to go into labor this morning - jeez, no consideration.

Amazing concert last night. Truly. I suppose any gig where 5 fairly remarkable things happen has to be considered amazing.

Thing #1: I meet Blir! He's perhaps a bit cuntish but nice enough...I suppose. He clearly enjoyed the gig, which is of zero surprise given that all the biggies were sung - Up the Down Escalator, In Shreds, Second Skin, Perfume Garden, and what looked to be Burgess' personal anthem, an impassioned Soul In Isolation.

Thing #2: The gig opens to Swamp Thing with the "Chameleons Vox" band jamming a long-intro version of the song. No Burgess to be seen for at least the first minute. Blir is standing at the front of stage-right, next to the stage door...which is where Mark first appears. Audience roars. He's standing right next to Blir (!) and starts dancing, exhorting Blir to do the same, who then does so. They both look every bit of their 40++ years with Blir looking significantly sillier than Mark. Mark proceeds thru the crowd in front of the stage to the steps in the middle, dancing along with exuberant partners as he goes. The crowd is apeshit, and he rips through a great rendition of the song.

Thing #3: During a brief lull between songs, I think for a moment that Blir has lost his mind when he screams out "MAMBO SUN!!!" WTF? I then realize Mark is wearing a T. Rex tank top. Unbelieveably, he looks at Blir then starts singing the first couple of lines of the song... "Beneath the bebop moon, I want to croon with you. Beneath the Mambo Sun, I got to be the one...with yooouuuuuu." I honestly shit you not. Blir is cracking up and hooting crazily and so is the audience. Incredible.

Thing #4: Mark and the band rip into a truly thunderous version of Singing Rule Britannia. Toward the end, Mark diverts from the standard verses and starts screaming "Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance to the radio"...several times! Holy fuck. I'm pretty sure I see Blir's jaw drop and his eyes just about roll into the back of his head. Clearly delirious at this point, but he recovers to scream his f'ing face off through the ending of the song.

Thing #5: It's been a great gig, and we mill about a bit, chatting up some new acquaintances. On the way out past the merch stand, Mark appears, looking eager to engage the remaining fans. There's some free gig posters and some of his autobio books for sale (View From A Hill). Blir chats him up, and both of them laugh when he thanks him for the Mambo Sun schtick. Mark then signs Blir's copy of his book and gig poster. Nice souvenirs! Helluva night. [8D]

I'm finding nothing in terms of a review for this particular show...apathetic wonks these San Franciscans. Tons from Seattle though, including some great clips from KEXP.

http://blogcritics.org/music/article/co ... ox-at-the/

Of the trio of Chameleons shows I've seen over the course of some twenty years — once in 1987 during their original run, once again during a reunion of the original lineup about ten years ago, and then finally this week — the Tuesday night show was by far the best of the three, even without the original band. For this tour, Burgess has instead surrounded himself with a group of much younger musicians who are now calling themselves Chameleons Vox.

Even so, there was no mistaking the fact that this was a Chameleons show — and a classic one at that. For the fans who've waited decades to hear nearly every great song from those first three great albums played live — this was truly a dream setlist. For their part, the members of this "new" band (who were probably all still attending grade school during the Chameleons original eighties run) more than rose to the task.

Not remotely close to the energy of the gig, but still nice footage...

On those KEXP videos, Mark's voice sounds shot. Thanks for this review. I saw Mark with the Sons of God a few times in the 90's and I was blown away. Too bad I missed them this time around.

Maybe just stilted from being in the studio? It didn't sound shot at the gig, and if he's slipped, he's slipped a lot less than the Ian McCullochs of the world.

You would have loved it Dee. He actually did do a couple of northeast gigs early in the summer that I wasn't able to catch. I think they're done for awhile, going to Europe next then maybe back to the US well after that. He intimated that San Francisco connections (girlfriend) would keep him coming back. He also noted that he has to make a living and that the US is an amenable place for that, not just with touring the back-catalog but his various side-projects.

Finally, there is this one vid of the opener on youtube. It has Mark's dancing/entry thru the audience I mentioned, but THANKFULLY you can't see all the way to the corner and the stage door where I was standing!
