I wish they were more representative of what's out there. It's an incredibly narrow slice of what was at SXSW. I wish I had a time machine to go back and do each South-By 3 or 4 more times in a totally different way. The various Spin, Pitchfork, Filter, Under the Radar, etc reviews might be more broadly informative.

Frau: Do you think it's even possible for these lo-fi surf bands to sound good live? I like a few songs in this genre, but when making my lists of bands to see, I kept asking myself "why would I want to go see them?"

Also, did Richard Barone/Vanessa Hay play any Pylon songs?

They should be able to sound good. They did back in the old days. I'm not sure which all from SX would fit into that lo-fi surf description though. No Age I guess, but not sure beyond that. I know they suffered from Red 7's sound and noted that. I definitely also thought "why would I want to go see them or anyone else like this anymore?" during their gig. I guess I wouldn't. I would even expand that umbrella to all the surfy bands that seemed everywhere last year - really sick of it. The lo-fi stuff I had an ear out for would have something more akin to Pavement, Mercury Rev, etc. Does that make any sense?

Decent one from Spin:

they did, the only song she sang was "Cool" by Pylon.

Barone played songs from the Bongos and his solo stuff and it was just him on guitar and a violinist. He seemed to be having a lot of fun and the crowd was pretty into it

Finally sitting thru the whole Dead Milkmen rant video Coop. Freakin hilarious. I must have been in a really cynical mood about the past to have missed the Fleshtones, Dead Milkmen, AND Ric Barone.

Anthony Fantano/Needledrop's video blog of SXSW. It seems he saw a lot of the same shows the Coop did. Couldn't agree more with his take on Deerhunter - absolute aural abuse live; quite different than on 'record'.

Odd that I didn't even think to check out Men Without Hats. Forgot they were there until you posted the vid.

'twas men without hats' first concert in 20 years or so. However not the original lineup and the moniker befits them no more. Hats off.
