MidPoint Music Festival: The Story

Marking its 11th year Sept. 27-29, Cincinnati’s MidPoint Music Festival has developed a reputation as the place to find the next big thing. Many of last year’s performers made year-end lists for Best Album or Best New Artist in major music publications such as Spin, Fader, Pitchfork, NME, Filter and Rolling Stone.

The list of recent MPMF performers includes Cut Copy, The Joy Formidable, Okkervil River, Booker T., The Felice Brothers, Best Coast, Phantogram, Surfer Blood, Caribou, A Place to Bury Strangers, Holy F*ck, Fang Island, +/-, Colour Revolt, Cults, Candy Claws, Brighton MA, Drink Up Buttercup, The Strange Boys, Felice Brothers, Javelin, Heartless Bastards, The Do, Chairlift, Micachu and the Shapes, Sarah Borges, Bob Pollard, Wussy and Buffalo Killers.

Attendance has grown along with the buzz, jumping from 13,500 in 2008 to more than 23,000 in 2011. Sales of three-day MPMF wristbands were up significantly last year, and overall box office receipts have doubled since 2008.

As for the buzz, MidPoint has more than 5,800 Facebook fans and 2,100 Twitter followers. The MPMF.com web site received 410,501 page views Jan. 1-Oct. 1, 2011, an increase of 13 percent over the same period the year before. Total post views of MidPoint’s Facebook page were 1,519,269 for the period Jan. 1-Oct. 1, 2011.

MPMF expanded its annual footprint in a big way in 2009, when it began hosting the MidPoint Indie Summer Series on Fountain Square, downtown Cincinnati’s main public meeting space. The free Friday night series completed its third summer June 3-Sept. 2, 2011, with another exciting schedule of national, regional and local performers.

Save the dates for MPMF.12 now: Sept. 27-29.
