Having missed them last time through, I was determined to go to the kick off of the world tour in Vancouver on Friday. Wow. It felt like a 2 hour standing ovation. An energetic performance and an eager audience singing and jumping along to every song! The guys seemed genuinely appreciative of the response and there was a great dynamic with the crowd.

They played 5 songs (if I counted correctly) off the new album, including a full 7 minutes of Metroland to open the show, which was better live than the soundcloud clip I had streamed. I'd say Dresden was the highlight from the new songs and the band gave it every ounce of passion their 50-something bodies could muster. It seems to stand up well against the early 80s-era OMD tracks. The other new songs...not so good.

Overall a great show, not just guys going through the motions to make a few bucks. I got my fill of early 80s synths, but was disappointed to not hear a couple of dance faves from back in the day like Tesla Girls or Telegraph. And, as expected, no Bloc Bloc Bloc, but maybe I'm the only one who loves that song.

It was quite a bit more powerful live but still a great OMD track. Better than anything from the last album.

It's a shame that OMD didn't play Tesla Girls or Telegraph. They played them on the History of Modern tour. They really do put on a great show.

They sure do! My saw them in L.A. last night and said they still "got it!" And put on a really good show!Rockin' it better than New Order are. [:0]

True. Toronto '11 would be pretty tough to beat. (Overgated snare drum sound aside.) I like [i]Electric[/i] a little better than [i]Modern[/i], so if they're intent on playing three-to-five new ones this show gets an immediate boost. You hold out hope Toronto might be an outlier given the two scheduled shows, but I'm assuming the bulk of the set's hit-heavy.

I'm seeing them for the first time in DC. Pretty psyched.

OMD sounded great in DC. McCluskey was animated, enthusiastic, and jumping around like a man half his age. I was seriously impressed. The man is 54 years old! The setlist was heavy on the top 40 pop stuff, but I didn't mind, and neither did the crowd. Everyone was dancing and yelling along to the songs. Great show. (Diamond Rings, the opening singer, was ... a trip. He doesn't seem to realize it's not 1985.)

Rotten news, guys.

July 19th Toronto show cut short by four songs as a week's worth of awful heat catches up to drummer Malcolm Holmes. Ambo came to collect him; Andy and Paul took the stage to announce he's had some heart issues in the recent past and didn't feel well enough to finish the show.

There'd be none of that Keith Moon Cow Palace 1973 foolishness here ("Can anybody here play the drums?"). The guys slapped some front row hands and promised they'd be back again.

I hope the last three dates of the tour aren't imperilled, but that may be a foregone conclusion. Watch the OMD site for details.

Best wishes to Malcolm Holmes for a speedy and full recovery. He was smiling and swinging the sticks with abandon earlier tonight. Sounded great.
