Politically Incorrect New Wave/Punk Songs

Postby nowhere girl » Sun Nov 14, 2004 3:03 am

What songs did you listen to in the 80s that now have you cringing at the(now)politically incorrect lyrics? If the song was in your collection, did you get rid of it, or did you chalk it up to "the times" and keep listening to it? I found some songs in my collection that I though were cool back then, and I can't believe now that I actually liked them. What has your experience with this been?

How about "Belsen Was a Gas" by the Sex Pistols? I'd say that's about as offensive as it gets:

"Belsen was a gas I heard the other day,
In the open graves, where the Jews all lay.
Life is fun, and I wish you were here

Those are some politically incorrect songs, alright! X also comes under this category with the chorus from the song,"Los Angeles"-singing,"She had started to hate every...." I heard this song again on Music Choice on the Retroactive Channel(cable music)

I don't find any lyrical content offensive and probably never will. I can still listen to bands like Fear or The Meatmen and enjoy them just as much as I did back then.

There is not one thing in my collection that I think is offensive to me. If someone finds a song offensive then I say get rid of it or lighten up, you used to like it and now because you've been poisoned with "politically correctness" the stuff is no good

I guess my response would be more apropos if posted in the topic "What Do You Miss Most About The 80s?", but since when do you need to stop listening to songs that are considered politically incorrect now?
We live in such a fearful state these days about

I'd love to see them try to release a song like "Illegal Alien" by Genesis today. Oh, the outrage! I barely remember the video but weren't they all dressed up like stereotypical Mexicans with ponchos and sombreros? What a godawful song.

I'll back you up on "Illegal Alien"...I downloaded that a while back just to give it a listen ( and promptly deleted it)....geez ! The song is pretty bad, but those lyrics...oy! And yes, you're correct on the video memory. Pretty crazy.

Ok, you’re worried about being politically correct? Didn't we all get into new wave and punk to say screw you, too all that crap?

Weren't the new wave and punk people looked upon as anti establishment? Wasn't that the whole point? Not to be the norm

For me it's not a question of PC so much as what didn't shock me at the time but shocks me now.

"Bodies," by the Sex Pistols ("She was a girl from Birmingham, she just had an ABORTION.") Not so much non-PC as exploitative, I suppose. I just read a no
