Things to do in LA?

Postby British » Mon Sep 20, 2004 12:48 am

In accordance to keeping the Not Necessarily New Wave forum section 100 times more active than the other sections...

I am considering hitting up LA in early December to escape the winter weather. I'd like to do stuff that's not "touristy". Are there places of interest for a new waver to hit? I'd like to try a few record stores for some obscure finds. There's gotta be an LA equivalent to Sam the Record man(Toronto).

Already trying to plan to meet Josie Cotton in Malibu. Wish me luck on that part.

Stay at The Standard hotel. It's in Hollywood. It's "retro" and NOT expensive.

I'll be staying with a friend in Pasadena, so more $$$ can be spent elsewhere. :)

In LA, there is one word: AMOEBA. It is the mega-music shop for vinyl, cds, etc. You should definitely check it out. I hear it is huge.
See if you can meet up with Jfiber at Superfecta as they are located in LA as well.

Amoeba IS huge. I could have spent 8 hours and $800.

Go to the Black Light Lounge on Santa Monica and Western. Go on a weekday afternoon, then on a Saturday night and compare the crowds.
Weekend nights it's the gathering place for the entire Hollywo

Definitely Amoeba's but be prepared to spend a lot of money and be totally overwhelmed. Other things to do:

Melrose Blvd. in the daytime (Around the Fairfax area, great for shopping for unique stuff)

Sunset Blvd. in the night time (Around the Virgi

The record store fershure. But you go to LA, ya gotta have kitsch. I know the in-crowd and jet set are going to say this or that place is way past its chic prime or "I used to love going there before all the posers..." Well, screw all that. LA is nothing

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I was going to hit Fairuza Balk's store(wiccan items), but she sold it to her management, so forget that.

Also, where can one get a black latex zip-up front t-shirt? Hard to come by in the twin cities. I just want one

LA is fantastic, I have been there a couple of times. Last time I was there I did a lot of "touristy stuff". Went to Universal, took in a movie at Mann's Chinese Theatre, visited The Hustler Store.

Another good record/cd shop is Vynl Fetish, it use t
