Prometheus - The Review

Postby coop41 » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:26 am

I know there are a lot of Sci- fi fans so I thought I would offer my review of the movie.
A little on my background, I have seen the first Star Wars movie, have never seen an episode of Star Trek and have no recollection if I ever saw Alien but I obviously remember the scene where the alien pops out of that chick's stomach. I watched an episode of Alf but I loved Lost In Space so I think I am fairly qualified to give an expert opinion on Prometheus.

First, I am seeing this at IMAX 3-D. Matinee Show so a little surprised when my ticket is $17. Having not seen a movie in 3-D since Coming' At Ya, they have apparently made some improvements with 3-D over the years. Batman is coming out with a new movie that looks like it may be pretty cool and Spider Man looked neat in 3-D but Tobey Maguire looks like he has lost a lot of weight. The highlight though was a movie called Frankenweenie, looks bad ass in 3-D but I digress. (disappointed no Django Unchained preview but it's obviously not in 3-D).

WARNING! Possible Spoiler Alerts To Follow:
Some stuff happened at the beginning which I didn't know what was going on but chalked it up to maybe you had to see Prometheus: The Beginning to understand. Then they were on this space ship and when they got off the space ship it was almost like they got into Paranormal Activity 4: Running Ghosts. Then this creepy robot guy made this other guy make his girlfriend have an alien in her belly and it led to the coolest scene which reminded me of the Claw Machine games in the Wal Mart entry where you try to pick up some ridiculously heavy object with a flimsy little crane thing.
So then the ships crash and I think the world was saved and then the big surprise ending that leads me to believe there will be a Prometheus(s) or Terminator Vs Prometheus somewhere down the road.
It was more of an action film than a scary movie ( the only time I was scared was when I bought my popcorn and Coke and reached into my pocket and was afraid I didn't have any money left after shelling out 17 dollars for my ticket). The movie was slightly miscast, it would have been awesome if Samuel L. Jackson was the ship captain because he could have used the line: "Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfu#*ing snakes on this motherfu#*ing plane". That would have lightened the mood and made me laugh. Charlize Theron was wasted in a meaningless role and she was completely overdressed (no nudity in this film which likely would have helped). She does wield a pretty mean flame- thrower.
All in all it was pretty entertaining, I doubt you will hear many people say it was the greatest movie ever but I am sure some of my less popular friends will debate the ending ad nauseum. Three stars.

I can only hope that your review doesn't turn out to be more entertaining than the movie itself.

Disappointed to hear about the lack of nudity. I thought it was a prerequisite in order to achieve an R rating these days.

But I've been stuck seeing G and PG-rated fodder for the past ten years, so what the hell do I know. Damn kids.

I saw the IMAX 3D version, my first 3D movie... they have this3D thing down. Anyway I loved it. If you love Alien, then this is along the same lines, a prequel, loved all the Alien references.

Batman, Spiderman and Frankenweenie 3D all look great too.

Saw it lat night. I can suspend my disbelief reasonably well but there were a few things that just didn't make sense.

It's nearly 70 years in the future and humans have mastered the technology to travel throughout the galaxy but the best we can do for weapons are handguns and flamethrowers? Flamethrowers were apparently needed so that two members of the crew could be gratuitously torched to death purely for shock appeal. Thanks for playing down to the audience, Ridley.

And how many people, scientists no less, would travel half a billion miles to an alien planet, discover an unknown but decidedly threatening, cobra looking life form and repeatedly reach out to provoke it? Didn't these fuckers see the first Alien movie?

Anyway, the script could have used a couple more rewrites and the movie a bit of editing. Not a lot of "aha" moments but quite a few WTFs.

And Coop is right. Theron was wasted in her role but you might not have paid 17 bucks if not for her prominent image in the ads and previews. At least the captain of the ship got to bang her but any scenes of this were cut out.

On the plus side, the movie was engaging and kept my interest with quite a few nail biting, edge of the seat scenes.

Definitely a sequel coming.

One thumb up.

Why did the alien drink from the pestle with the poison?
Why was the last big dude so irrationally angry?
Why did psycho guy go all strong and agro?
Why would ancient drawings point to some toxic weapons facility planet?
What was the point of the holograms?
Why didn't they just cast an old guy?
Why did he look like Dr Evil?
"We need top people for an unprecedented $1Trillion space mission. All sociopaths unfit to work in team settings welcomed to apply."
"Hey, I'm a space biologist. I'm a scientist, I'm so smart. Ooh look at the hideous little snake thing. Look at the way it's sitting there in a defensive posture. Cute. I think I'll get closer. Now it looks like it might attack like a cobra. Isn't it adorable? Maybe I'll pet it. Ack it's on my arm! How the fuck did that happen? NOOOOOO IT BROKE MY ARM!!!! HOLY SHIT NOW IT'S A GIANT SPACE COCK RAMMING DOWN MY THROAT!"

What a complete cluster fuck of a movie.

^^This. The plot holes were so large you could drive the titular starship though it.

How could they lose their way after they've just made a highly-detailed 3-D map of the site? Aren't you in constnat contact with the ship?

1/2 billion miles wouldn't even be out of our solar system, much less the distance to another

We have starships, but shitty flashlights

Why would mixing an alien sample into somebody's drink with the intent of infecting them with extraterrestrial DNA work? carnivores and omnivores eat DNA all the time. Something called "stomach acid" destroys it. And what was the point of this in the first place? Just to see what would happen?

Its a good thing Shaw had access to Charlize's cabin. Locks are apparently a thing of the past

You've seen one vagina-squid growing in a person's stomach you've seen them all...

I did watch Prometheus but not on 3D though it was suggested by a lot of people to go with it. And though it is going to tickle those who are big fans of sci-fi films, it still has a very interesting storyline to it.

just feel that the lead doctor exited the movie a little too early and thought that it would make for something that would really allow him to fully experience what it's like to live in there.

it wasn't as scary nor as suspenseful as either Alien or even Aliens (second one).. but it wasn't bad either, though I will probably watch it again for the second time..

the main character actress Noomi Rapace, I like her, she's almost as bad-ass as Sigourney Weaver... now I want to see her in the original Swedish version of The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo (I've only seen the US remake).

That's why this is a prequel, though I was also surprised how friendly they acted towards that snake-like alien creature....
