New (Kinda) Bands

Postby michelle » Sat Mar 11, 2006 5:08 am

Hi,

I work at a college radio station, it's great fun. Anyways...there have been a lot of new bands out (aside from the Arctic Monkeys) that sound sort of New Wave/Post Punk, just thought I'd share.

Maxïmo Park- They're in the same vein as the Arctic Monkeys, a bit rockish.

Polystar- It's sort of like Depeche Mode, they've got a few good songs.

The Glowstars- They're sort of like The Cure or early Smiths...good stuff.

The Birthday Massacre- They've been around since 2000 or so, I started listening to them in early '02...great band, they're doing a tour now.

Anywho, those bands are all pretty darn good, so if you want to hear anything by them, feel free to instant message me: anixeteam. Or, you can always email me at mjc4339@rit.edu.

Heard some from Birthday Massacre, loved "Video Kid". Pretty cool stuff. I'll keep my ears open for the others.

BTW: Welcome aboard! I used to DJ when I was in college (waaaay back in the early 90's) so it'll be cool to trade some stories.

Sure thing! What college did you DJ at?

I'm at WITR in Henrietta (Rochester Institute of Technology), it's a pretty crazy station.

I didn't DJ at a college station, but DJ'ed at a "EZ-Listening" station while attending Purdue U. (Hey, it paid the bills. I hated the playlists I was stuck with)

That's no fun, but at least you get paid. We don't get paid, but we get to make up our own playlist as long as it follows the rules, 50-70% New, FCC Friendly and the like.

In hindsight, no paycheck was worth having to listen to the drek I was stuck with playing. Anne Murray? Gordon Lightfoot? Air Supply? My brain has been permanently scarred from their crappy crap. Consider yourself damn lucky, Michelle. At least you get to play SOME good music, not drek like I had to.

BTW: Do you ever use 'Totally Radd!!' in your playlists? If not, you should. Great stuff.

haven't heard them, I'll have to check them out!

As a side note, here's a playlist I have from when I went on randomly at 12 am after Saint Patricks day (hence the Pogues doubleshot)

Playlist:
Public Image Ltd.- Rise
Love and Rockets- Ball of Confusion
--
The Primitives- Crash
The Nips- All the time in the world
The Modernettes- I can only give you everything
Sun Demons- I'll Come Running
---
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- Up Jumped the Devil
Colours Run- Winter's Day
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark- Enola Gay
Stray Cats- Runaway Boys
The Pretenders- Message of Love
--
Pansy Division- No Protection
Arctic Monkeys- Fake Tales of San Francisco
Buzzcocks- Oh Shit
Young Canadians- This is Your Life
--
The Cure- Hot Hot Hot
Bauhaus- Kick in the Eye
Gang of Four- To Hell With Poverty
--
Colour Field- Armchair Theatre
A Certain Ratio- Do the Du
The Smiths- Panic
Soul Coughing- Adolpha Zontziger
--
Ian Dury- Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
Sloan- The Good in Everyone
Inspiral Carpets- Directing Traffic
Silkworm- Never met a man I didn't like
--
Crispy Ambulance- Are You Ready?
The Comsat Angels- Believe it
The Pogues- Waxies Dargle
The Pogues- Boys from County Hell
--
The Smiths- Cemetry Gates
The Smiths- Still Ill

It was great as I could play whatever I wanted...the massive amount of Smiths at the end is due to the fact that I ran out of songs!

The Birthday Massacre and Maximo Park are both excellent bands. I play them on my station pretty much constantly.

I ran promotion for them all throughout highschool...they saved me from listening to nu-metal, all in all, they had a few good songs! [:)]
