Goldfrapp/ Verizon

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Goldfrapp/ Verizon

Has anyone caught the ad for Verizon's new phone/mp3 player? I believe that's Goldfrapp's "strict machine " as the background music.

Yup. They're in ads for Coke and a few other things now. Mega cross-marketing ala Moby. Even my kids are like "Hey dad, isn't that your weird 'Lovely Head' band?" [^]

Flipping through the channels saw one of the girls on Fox's "You think you can dance" reality-show dancing to Goldfrapp last night.

The 1st time I ever heard Goldfrapp was in the Fall of 2003 on Channel One (that annoying "news program" played in schools nowadays) for an Atari commercial. It was when Atari put out their RETRO games, such as PacMan, Frogger, etc. into a handheld console. I was instantly captivated by this awwesome, myserious song ! (And still am).

Well, so far a very small NWO contingent will be catching her at the NYC Roseland Ballroom on October 18th. She puts on a great show. Any other takers???

Speaking of which, this was a very fun concert this past week. But like Schwenko had told me before, the Roseland Ballroom was a bit of a barn with mediocre sound quality - that definitely was not the highlight of the show, especially since a noticeably voice-weary Alison's voice cracked on "Number One" at the end of the concert. Neither was the song sequencing with a couple of oddly plodding numers for a concert and the absense of the heart-thumping synths of one of my favorite tracks, "Koko". But nevertheless, a great time that I think many new wavers would enjoy. There's certainly no one else doing her particular blend of uber-glam Bowie-meets-Numan-meets-Donna Summer-meets-Modern Synth Stack-meets-Chunky Bass music these days.

I especially enjoyed that she opened with two numbers off her original Felt Mountain album, the operatic "Utopia" and surreal vocodings of "Lovely Head". [:p]

Here's the very lightly-clad Alison with her occasional dancers who would come out alternately in masks, bikinis, and wolves and horses heads...

And here she is with the Jesus-looking dude. That's right my friends, that's a genuine keytar along with an all-acrylic see-thru bass on the far side...
