Destroyer - Kaputt (2011)

Give this one a shot. It's much-loved by the hipsters, but it's also a really fine record. My favourite from 2011's first month, for what it's worth.

Destroyer is a 15-year-old band from Vancouver's Dan Bejar, perhaps best-known as The New Pornographers' second writer. Kaputt's sound differs significantly from his earlier work, so it can be enjoyed either as a standalone or an entry point into some very good indie pop.

Kaputt's a mite yacht rockish - very smooth, very upscale-sounding - and the amazingly clean production is totally pre-MTV AM radio (i.e., none of that monster gated-snare nonsense). Crisply produced, not a hair out of place. Lovely swales of fat, floating string-synth notes and syncopated rythmns. Sax lines out of Songs From The Big Chair. Top melodies througout.

There's been one official video so far, the title track. I'd also reco "Chinatown" and "Savage Night At The Opera" as songs worth checking out.
