Your top 2011 albums?

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Postby Frau_Blucher » Wed Dec 21, 2011 1:07 am

Man, I wish I didn't have so many albums to revisit!

Lestat reminded me of a later-comer - Screen Vinyl Image. I forgot about them after an earlier EP. The Strange Behavior LP is zooming up my list - need to do some edits. Another sweet late add is Spotlight Kid's Disaster Tourist - lots of Ringo Deathstarr in this, and therefore also MBV.

You STARTED this shit!

On another note, nobody can have 100 "Top 2001" albums. I mean was there anything you DIDN'T like? A little discrimination please.

Plus you would have to find the time to peruse, download/buy and listen to one album an average of every 3.65 days just to get 100. Assuming it would take an average of three listens to make an informed decision, that's an entire album every 1.22 days. And that doesn't count the ones that didn't make the cut.

My acceptance rate on music runs between 5-10% of what I hear. Best case, that's 1000 albums to get 100 good ones. Or more than three albums per DAY times three listens! Not humanly possible- I think Edward is just fucking with you Frau.

I demand to see receipts for all this alleged music and am calling for a full investigation. Subpoenas will be sent out post haste!

I think you can. You're pre-selecting what you'd choose to listen to first of all, assuming these are albums you just might like. To get to 100, you might only have started with 150, quickly discarding many after a quick sampling thru the tracks. Of my 150+, I can say I fully listened thru them all once. After that, I likely sampled thru them 2 more times. But yes, not all the list is "top"...the top of the list would be the top albums with the rest being shit I was disappointed with. And go see Spotify about your receipts.

I am wading through my lists and am pretty confident of 133 that I have listened to once thoroughly (doesn't take me more than that to know something is crap)but most at least twice. I also have a sub list that I have not gotten around to a second listen and my notetaking isn't very good and the records are either unmemorable or I didnt listen to them. There are plenty of days I will listen to 4 or 5 complete records. I typically listen to stuff I hear the singles on and I check out many of the indie rock playlists and listen to those which helps me narrow down what full records I listen to and what I don't. Google Indie Rock -playlist and there is an unbelievable amount of free stuff out there. And by records I mean cd's and by cd's I mean downloaded mp3's. 2011 marks the first year I did not by 1 actual cd or dvd.

2011's PJ Harvey, 2010's Arcade Fire, 2009's Animal Collective, 2008's TV on the Radio...wooosh...these all go right past me. I really don't understand the critical collective out there.

Is this the thread where we just name every hipster band on the planet?

Let me consult with this month's Pitchfork first and then get back to you.

I didn't listen to over 20,000 songs or go to over 50 concerts either. It's impossible.

Dude, that is nothing compared to people I know.

Sorry, I think you already named them all already. Can't like anything else anybody else likes, you know, or else I won't be "non-comformist" and "against the machine."

Unless of course you only like them ironically. And then I can totes like them too. Except not really. Because hipsters don't really "like like" anything, after all.
