Your top 2011 albums?

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Your top 2011 albums?

Postby Frau_Blucher » Sun Dec 11, 2011 6:54 am

Obsessive-compulsive mode ON...

Albums I've listened straight thru at least once this year; most more than that. Really a needle in a haystack year. Numerically, I've been way over-generous. I can only recommend thru the 7.5s at best. Ranked thru 7.5, and just alphabetical by score after that. I'm eager to see what I've missed - likely some glaringly obvious goodies.

Replacing the original monstrosity with a Rate Your Music list...

Great list! How you find the time to compile it, let alone listen to all of it, is a mystery. Enjoyed perusing it.

My mind spins at all the releases from last year. Here are just a few for now.

The first thing that came to mind for me was Tycho's "Hours". Maybe a bit more electronica than Nextwave but I think the definition can be stretched here. Sort of captures my ears the Moby used to.

I think Fitz & The Tantrums had a breakout year with "Pickin' Up The Pieces". Probably best blue eyed soul since ABC was in it's heyday. Recommended:

Don't Gotta Work It Out
Breakin‚ The Chains of Love
L.O.V.
MoneyGrabber

Austra impressed with "Feel It Break":

Lose It
Beat and the Pulse (I think they may have stolen Ladytron's mojo on this one)
Spellwork

I understand Future Islands can kind of be a love it or hate it kinda thing. As for The Dum Dum Girls, if hanging out in dirty garages with chicks who like to Rock is not your thing, it's cool. I would say they are more like The Bangles dark, alter ego, which is why I like them.

I have to smile at the bands you mention. I've recoiled from even listening to Tantrums because a couple of very mainstream friends have touted them so much - totally unfair I know. Ditto for Foster the People - I just refuse. Some friends love Austra too, and again I'm probably being unfair, but they had such a shit awful set at SXSW that I just couldn't get past it. Finally, I think if Dum Dum came out in a vacuum, I'd probably like them. I think their Smiths cover is awesome. But it's not a vacuum, and there's just so much of that kind of sound around this year.

I'm thinking I've probably listened to too many albums, and a weird sort of aversion reaction is taking place. I thought if I slowly but dutifully listened and took notes throughout the year, I'd discover more great albums that way. But I haven't discovered any more than what I think I might have just taking tips from friends. It was frankly an incredibly fruitless effort.

I get it. Call it the douche bag factor. Once certain music becomes associated with decidedly uncool people it may lose it's appeal to some degree.

On the other hand, you could give your friends credit for their (somewhat) progressive stance here.

Cloud Nothings is another band I enjoyed discovering in 2011.

I recall liking Cloud Nothings earlier in the year. They disappeared off my radar - need a quick revisit.

Dude, it's like we were separated at birth...though I managed to hog the womb and came out with the giant misshapen cranium. But that's besides the point.

Coop, be sure to rearrange Spin's list so we can't tell it's copied. Push Beyonce down to at least 10th or 11th for example.
