Your top 2011 albums?

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Postby MikeP » Tue Dec 27, 2011 6:29 am

I will get mine in before the weekend -- not sure about 150 albums even though I have listened to well over 150 albums from this year. I will be applying my iTunes ratings aggregator script again (incorporating 1/2-star ratings level of granularity) to see where the album fall. I'm too busy compiling my mega year-end MP3 comp (probably an epic 2 CDs this year)! Also need to update that damn memory-munching Amazon MP3 list in the upper right for god's sake![:D]

I didn't listen to over 20,000 songs or go to over 50 concerts either. It's impossible.

Dude, that is nothing compared to people I know.

Happy 2012 everyone!!!

Okay, as promised here are my top picks. I listened to about 180 albums this year which is a record (no pun intended). Don't think I can sustain that pace for this year.[B)]

Looks like the ladies kicked some ass this year, snagging the top 3 spots![8D] I used the same methodology as last year, strictly ranking each album based on individual song ratings and averaging (out of possible 5.0). Also, 80s artists who had releases some 30 years ago made a strong comeback in 2011: Kate Bush, The Cars, Blondie, Wild Swans, Duran Duran, Wire & John Foxx!

I gave a good listen to about 60 new records this year.

I'd need more money and more hours in the day to get through everything the NWO board inspires me to sample; invariably no "Best Of Year XXXX" list is ever truly "complete" on December 31st.

Cool list with half a dozen that I've never even heard of...I'll need to give those a listen!

88) Duncan Sheik - Covers 80's (4.125)

Interesting acoustic stuff here. Enjoying covers of "The Ghost In You", "What Is Love?" and "Love Vigilantes".

Only 90 or so more albums to go!...

I notice lots of bands I haven't heard of on these "top 2011" lists here at NWO. But Austra keeps popping up on many, including my own. Any other artists getting listed as consistently?

Well, I love lists. I'm poring over everything shared here. I liked Friendly Fires too (#26 on mine) - "Hurting" was maybe my favourite song from a British band this past year. And I've always liked Ivy (#41 on mine), but struggled with this one, despite my refreshed Dom Durand crush. I should stop comparing everything they do to Apartment Life.

Honestly, I think everybody here could benefit from scouring the Captured Tracks label roster. It's shot through with C86/goth-lite/Factory/synthpop adherents. (Craft Spells [#9], Soft Metals [#18], Blouse [#32], last year's Minks record [strong aroma of Tolhurst drum-era Cure], and so on...)
