Best LPs of 2012

Postby SallyLightfoot » Mon Dec 03, 2012 2:22 am

Another disappointing year for music. I must be getting old. I checked out most of the critic's picks for this year but didn't find much that blew me away. I spent another year and 90% of my music $ on oldies/rarities which have recently become available (e.g., Howard Tate, Don Covay, Rodriguez, Klaatu, Toots & the Maytals, Gun Club, Taj Mahal, Badfinger).

Here's the new stuff I liked in 2012:

King Tuff - Self-titled
Ravens & Chimes - Holiday Life
Divine Fits - A Thing Called
The Walkmen - Heaven
Jason Lytle - Dept of Disappearance
Allo Darlin' - Europe
Stars - The North
Great Elk - Autogeography
The Memories - Self-titled
Apache Dropout - Bubblegum Graveyard
Sonny & The Sunsets - Longtime Companion
Young Rival - Stay Young

Do you have any favorites of 2012?

Good to see Tame Impala making a few of the lists.

Even better to see critical darlings Mumford And Sons making NONE of them. If I wanted to hear Hippie Dippy, pastoral shite I'd bust out an old Seals and Crofts album!

Amen to Stars, Beach House, Sharon Van Etten, Cloud Nothings and Two Door Cinema Club!

Frank Ocean and Grimes seem to make the top of a lot of the lists. Which is soul-crushing.

I know this is an LP thread, but I want to include a digital EP from
Pulselize called "Decay"

http://nspcc.fairsharemusic.com/release/decay-2

I've never (until now) paid for a download, but since there is no physical product I've done it, especially for the track "A Daydreamer". I saw them perform this at SynthJAM 2012 in Tokyo last month.

Every year as soon as the Top 10 lists come out you start hearing the same old crap, terrible year for music, these lists suck, and on and on. Back in my day….
It reminds me of the person you tell about a funny skit on this past week’s episode of Saturday Night Live and they tell you “that show hasn’t been funny since ____________ left. The old ones were way funnier.” Really? Exactly when was that? When was the last time you watched SNL? I would argue the past couple years have been great. This year, to me, it has been one of the best in some time. Uneven? You bet. Has been forever. My opinion. But I digress….
I am not sure if Frank Ocean put out the best record this year. I have friends that go both ways on it. I haven’t listened to it and I doubt I ever will. fun. put out a good record this year with a couple of great songs. They are up for a bunch of Grammy Awards. Super popular. Should I hate them because they are popular or is it ok to still like them since I think Nate Reuss is a songwriting genius and I have followed him since the first ep he put out with his band The Format? I would argue his songwriting and songs still sound the same to me. The Format struggled in its early days to sell anything. Now they are everywhere. I get why some people hate them. I’m not sure if Dylan or Springsteen or The Rolling Stones put out the best record of their careers this year. Didn’t listen to them. Half the stuff on these lists I haven’t listened to nor even heard on the radio. Ever hear of Gotye? That song sucks ass. Unfortunately, me and the rest of the world will never be able to get it out of our heads. Maybe that entire album is great. Don’t know, never listened to it. Do some of my favorite records this year get some airplay? Yup. That’s ok. I like them anyway. Am I as cool as some music critic? Probably …errr I mean I doubt it. Will my picks be ridiculed? Probably, that’s ok though.
With that said, I listened to a hell of a lot of music this year, as much, if not more than most people I would guess but not as much as plenty of other people. It by no means makes me an expert. The albums I selected were the best to me. I thought it was a pretty darn good year for music but I tend to be a fairly positive person. I saw a lot of good bands live, there are so many great places to hear music now for little to no cost and may I suggest, if you don’t like what you hear, start seeking out other options. There were many 80’s and 90’s artists who put out good records this year (The Cult, Dinosaur Jr., the Fixx, etc.) and there were a lot of good reissues as well. So, as Frau once said, I like what I like and I know what I like when I hear it or something like that. If you want to listen to any of this stuff I am happy to make anyone a mix cd or fill your thumb drive or whatever, just let me know.

TL;DR - Don't be a grumpy old person

Here’s my list I guess (I’m sure I likely forgot something):

1. Eugene McGuiness – The Invitation To The Voyage
2. Saint Motel - Voyeur
3. The Baddies - Bronto
4. Imagine Dragons – Night Visions (with 2 additional ep’s, deluxe version and itunes extra songs)
5. Dan Wholey - The Dan Wholey ep
6. The Wedding Present – Valentina (plus 4 songs ep)
7. Shearwater – Animal Joy
8. Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly - Maps
9. The Prostitutes – Deaf To The Call
10. Reverend & the Makers - @Reverend_Makers
11. Band of Skulls – Sweet Sour
12. Jack White - Blunderbuss
13. Titus Andronicus – Local Business
14. Fun. – Some Nights
15. Frank Turner – Last Minutes and Lost Evenings
16. The Black Keys – El Camino
17. Why? – Mumps
18. Two Door Cinema Club – Beacon
19. Green Day – Uno
20. Green Day - Dos (haven’t listened to Tre yet)
Other records I enjoyed this year in no particular order- Fear – the Record (re-release), Dinosaur Jr. – Chocumel Daze, Die Antwoord – Ten$ion, Hatcham Social – About Girls , Django Django – Django Django, Chappo - Moonwater, Fidlar –Fidlar, Marcy Playground – Lunch Recess and Detention, Youngblood Hawke – ep, The Stranglers - Giants
