Best of 2014

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Best of 2014

Postby MikeP » Tue Jan 06, 2015 6:00 pm

I wanted to get this in before 2015 got into full swing -- here are my top lists for 2014. I thought it was a solid year but previous years seemed more impressive in terms of quality of output across the board. This list is not so much "Next Wave" but there was plenty of '80s New Wave and pop revivalism from bands like Tennis, De Lux (Talking Heads reborn!) and The Ting Tings.

Top 10 Songs of 2014:
1) Real Estate - Had to Hear
2) Broken Bells - Perfect World
3) Jenny Lewis - She's Not Me
4) Band of Skulls - Nightmares
5) The Decemberists - Make You Better
6) Hozier - Take Me to Church (technically 2013 and way overplayed by now, but it will endure as a classic in my book)
7) Niia - Body
8.) The Rosebuds - In My Teeth
9) The War on Drugs - Under the Pressure
10) Ace Reporter - Untouched and Arrived

Re: Best of 2014

Postby zill » Thu Jan 08, 2015 9:50 pm

This was a busy year for me...the kind of year that goes by in a heartbeat. There wasn't much time to search for new music and I didn't think I would even be able to come up with 20 songs for a "best of" list, especially since there was no new French Films material out in 2014. I was hoping to see more lists posted here so I could see what I missed!

1) Agent Side Grinder - This Is Us

It's electric. Synthetic. Minimalistic. Dark AND melodic. Perfect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TyDQLowmW4

2) ACTORS - How Deep is the Hole *

Dark and driving. The coolest Vancouver band on the go. I think this was a b-side but it's their best since Post Traumatic Love in 2012.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_MqB4Kn2y8

3) Gazelle Twin - Anti Body

Scary, evil, mesmerizing shit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMiPD6EqbyQ

4) Rey Pila - Alexander

See above - electric. Synthetic. Minimalistic. Dark AND melodic. And it reminds me of a tranny surprise video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmK-zK5YJSw

5) Bachelor - Get Out

Melodic synthpop. Sweet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ymv1WiqTwg

6) Principe Valiente - Take Me With You

I had to post this so I don't have to turn in my "cool kids" card. From what is probably the best album of the year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFmZeQ0Dhow

7) The Deloreans - As Long As It's You

Perfect indie-pop with an amazing buildup to the high water mark of the song. I'm surprised this wasn't more successful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhM3mHU9W2E

8) The New Pornographers - Dancehall Domine

Brill Bruisers was another great NP album. This is my favorite track but there are a few to choose from. Perfect power pop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBDzsNwe56w

9) LADiDA - Idiot

Straight forward punk/power pop that's just plain fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfF96f9CNYM

10) Broncho - Class Historian

DOODODOODOOODODOOODODOODODOODOODODOOODOOO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to-nZLV794g

11) A Novel Resort - Everything We Ever Hoped For

A beautiful guitar based song that apparently only 500 other people in the world listened to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdxTubcizug

12) Slave to the Squarewave - Alive & Electric *

So Canadian 80's new wave it hurts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxuY4cNzlUA

13) La Roux - Sexotheque

All you La Roux haters can suck it. Synthpop bliss. Why is it uncool to like music with a melody?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHMUKPD2gj4

14) Bordeen - Broken Bones *

Perfect Canadian power pop. Well, not as good as Vancouver power pop, but not bad for Upper Canadians.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd0LvulAgA8

15) Dinner - Going Out

Why? It's weird. The video is how I imagine a night out with '82. And I love his geeky arm movements
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlLQMJ7eOi8

16) Death Team - Fucking Bitches In The Hood

You want to hate it. You don't want to admit you like it. But there's an echo of People Who Died. A feel of Ca Plane Pour Moi. So just smile and enjoy it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL_JJLlGsaM

17) Van Dammes - Daniel

The best rip off of the Ramones in awhile.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnyMYva8oC8

18) Anyone For Tennis - Charlie Sheen

Americana. Just for something completely different.
https://soundcloud.com/anyonefortennis/ ... ican-dream

19) Lacrosse - 50% of your love

Trust me it's better if you just listen and don't watch the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O94D2ep9sPQ

20) The Autumn Stones - End of Faith *

Saxy! Reminds me a little of the Church.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvlwRcIdqv0

AND of course, the great return of legendary Vancouver songwriter Art Bergmann...

Art Bergmann - Company Store *
