Editors - "Fingers in the Factories"

Discussions about the new generations of bands influenced by '80s New Wave and Postpunk

Postby Mechi » Mon Aug 07, 2006 2:01 am

I've got the album in my hands. [:D]
Then, I'm commenting on it.

Editors- The Back Room

Every time a next wave band comes out, both critics and fans try to describe their sound using the "sounds like..." tool. Unfortunately, Editors is target of the "sounds like Joy Division" tag which has become a sort of bag in which people stuff artists whose music is not easy to describe and has an obscure feeling to it.
From where I see it, Editors and Joy Divsion only have in common the fact that their music is very personal. But that's all. So I'm gonna describe this album as if I had never listened to JD in my life (which is something difficult).
Instrumentally speaking, The Back Room is a guitar-driven album which kicks off with frail guitar passages that end up creating a monotony feeling which is only rescued by "Munich", probably the best song in the album. Luckily, the situation is reversed in the second half of the album (since Fingers in the factories) in which the instruments have a different impulse.
Lyricswise, it's a beautiful album from where you look it. In my opinion, is the album of someone going through changes in his life and not someone depressed or broken-hearted. Actually, I think lyrics are what make Editors an interesting band.
In general, The Back Room is a pretty good album. I think is one of those albums that you end up liking a lot after several listening sessions.

To say that they weren't influenced, at least somewhat, by JD would probably not be accurate. The singer seems to have taken on some of the inflections of Ian Curtis. Editors do have their own sound though. And I think the boys from Manchester would be proud.

I love that cover, Corinne Bailey Rae also covers Munich... but I like the REM one best.
Editors' cover of Orange Crush is great (and it's a hard song to cover cause it has such an intensity).
And the Editors' second album has shown to me that they are a band of their own... with much more of a personality than SWR or any other wannabies that emerged 4- 5 years ago(which quickly disappeared).

One of the best new bands of the century thus far. This new direction sounds very Depeche Mode Sounds of the Universe and has me slightly concerned though. Is Flood on a "Me Too" bandwagon? And how on earth did he sell it to the Editors? I guess I'll just hope for the best.
