Rough Trade's Top 100 of 2005

Postby Frau_Blucher » Mon Nov 28, 2005 10:15 pm

I put the Rough Trade label in a roughly similar bin as things like Factory Records. So I'm thinking their Top 100 albums of the year might be an interesting perusal for independent minded folks. Some good stuff...

There's some excellent stuff on there and quite a bit that sounds interesting but I haven't gotten around to yet. COIL at #45! Awesome.[8D]

That #1 Brakes album is indeed very good. I picked it up as a used import in NYC for 7 bucks - what a deal. It's kind of a next wave throwback to good ole 70s jamming and musicianship.

And what's the odds that Brian Eno is NOT one of Oneno's 9? How 'bout the Go-Betweens at #59 - nice! Plus I hope everyone is aware of the quiet Canadian invasion that's been going on: Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, and Boards of Canada here plus stuff like the Stills, New Pornographers, Hot Hot Heat, Metric, Stars, Feist, !!! ("chck chck chck"), etc. I also say keep an eye out for that Iron and Wine/Calexico album - these guys have a very cool sound if you're looking to break out of a musical rut.

And The Dears - probably my favorite Canadian band right now.

DAMN these Canadians! They're so hard to tell apart from 'Merkuns.

Thanks HG...the Dears have never appeared on my radar. I'll check 'em out since these Canucks haven't let me down yet.

Hm. A significant number of those records are on my playlist.

(Incidentally, doesn't that represent a bit of a turn-around for Blir regarding the Brakes record?)

You're just bragging then about your good taste. [;)]

And yeah, turn-around seems to be my M.O. ...I'm lukewarm to a lot of things, even Siren's Call and Goldfrapp, then I seem to warm up big time and start frothing at the mouth. Dunno why. [?][?]

Strange but Interpol is missing on this list.

I don't think they, Outerpol or Interpol had anything in 2005. Antics was last year. [;)]
