Opins? Private Forum for Postings?

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.

It's not just for the new people.
It's up to us to not post a yousendit when someone requests an easily available track. I know it's easy to do & we like helping people out - but many of us, including myself, have probably violated that a couple of times.

It's easier to post a link to Amazon than a yousendit!

I am someone who doesn't like to buy a whole album for one song. (Lord knows I have done that 100's of times before finding the outpost)
If the situation arises as WolverineSyr pointed it. It could be done via email directly, like we did in the past. [:)]

Well, just to tell my modest opinion:

On the one hand I profited a lot by the "yousendit"-postings, on the other I definitely see the "danger in it".

What I think we shouldn't do, is stop song posting at all and go back to "answering requests only". Not everyone here can keep track of what is "rare" or "commercially unavailable". One song I posted, was "Gunbarrel Highway" of Midnight Oil. In America this song obviously is a rarity, because it was only available as a vinyl b-side, in Germany it's a bonus track on the official CD.

The great thing here - next to getting requests fulfilled - is being able to explore new (rare) music, you weren't even aware of its existence. In the last 2 months (that's how long I'm on NWOutpost) I've been introduced to many artists, I hadn't even heard of before - and I always thought I know (!) the 80s!

And I think most of us here, posting songs they like to share with others, just try to introduce others to their (rare) favourites. So my suggestions are:

- no more posting complete lists of song collections or requests, which might attract (e.g. via Google searches) people who are just "hunting" mp3s
- trying to check the "obscurity factor" (rareness vs. availability) before posting a song
- links are only readable for registered users

I think these rules/measures should keep things in justifiable bounds.

I don't care if people post a request list of 100 songs.
I don't care if people post a request for songs that are easilly available.

I don't care because I just ignore their requests (as well as requests from obvious leechers).

If people post 100 songs or whatever and you think it is wrong, don't download them and don't comment on it. If uploaders feel unappreciated, they'll usually stop.

You guys complain about all this but it works both ways. Obviously, people post requests because they get filled and people upload because they know people will download them.

Good point. Yet, I doubt that it works as there will always be some people who want everything. Could you resist if you find a rarity you'd been looking for ages if it was posted among a large list of easily-to-find items?
I think, additional to your suggestion, a self-imposed limit and rules is a good way (and yes, I know, that these rules will be violated by some).

BTW, it seems we are going back to normal at NWO. Looks like the discussion has helped for the time being.

Well, it looks like things came to boil last Friday. We were all enjoying these offerings and I -- quite frankly -- felt like I becoming addicted to crack![:D] Most of you know I'm pretty much hands off, but I think we should all try to use more discretion in this area. My stance is that I would prefer to see only rarities and obscurities posted, and in limited numbers. I don't need someone to be show-offish about their fantastic music collection by posting 25 songs, most of which are in print on CD. I actually prefer to see stuff mastered from vinyl sources that has never been issued on CD, but I know that a lot of choice b-sides, extended mixes and bonus tracks have now been issued on import CDs and are hard to come by or justify $$$-wise, so a few of those should be fine as well.

I do have some concerns that by freely allowing these Yousendit links, I could be viewed as enabling or at least conveniently turning a blind eye to illegal music sharing. It's all a bit murky, but for now let's just use more discretion.

I will, however, stand by my request that entire albums not be posted -- especially if they are available on CD. This actually makes me a bit uncomfortable and it's something I want to enforce.

If you suddenly find yourself champing at the bit to post a bunch of songs in your collection -- I recommend stepping back, taking a deep breath and simply offering one or two. The hub should be the place to share your music collections en masse.

My two cents, if anyone is interested:

-"There should be clear criteria for what can, and can not be posted, and this would be monitored by someone who has the ability to edit posts if necessary."
My feeling (generally) is that if you can buy it somewhere, it shouldn't be posted here. Hey, why not check your local library system and see if you can borrow the disc?

I would absolutely love to join the the hub but my home computer only has a 10 GB hard drive, out of which only 3-something GB is left. There's no way I'd be able to meet the 1 GB minimum share. So being able to share and post tracks here is fantastic (I do my downloading & burning at work, part of the advantages of working nights!)

In theory I'm not against a private forum, depending on what constitutes a "newbie" versus a "veteran".

Maybe there should be a limit of three songs per post?

Did you read ANY of the posts or MikeP's reply?!!! Is chronic jumping to conlclusions a virus around here? WTF! This whole thread is about how we can keep sharing but avoid potential external troubles. If you're too F'ing dense to get that, don't let the door hit you in the ass.

I'll echo Blir's comments...and add "Can you take waverboy with you"? He seems to be your main competition at the "Jump to Conclusions" Olympics.

YouSendIt.com just posted that they are going out of business all of a sudden. I wonder why?!? Something about a sudden drop of usage.... go figure. [;)]

Blir and Eight6, I share your view on the jump-to-conclusions part. It's a bit scary how fast some people turn their back on sth. as soon as they are asked to exercise some self-restraint, esp. when it comes to keeping other people out of trouble. (I don't mean to be rude but some posts here seem to mirror a grab-all-you-can-and-leave attitude. If that is the case, go look somewhere else!!! And again: this is about keeping up the sharing of certain tracks.)
