This is the thread where you list the songs that, when you first heard them, it dawned on you that this FM station was truly playing by a different set of rules.

I listened to WLIR during the early/mid 80's, so I could rattle off about 20 or so songs that proved their hell-bent disregard for the corporate-radio format.

I don't want to steal your thunder, so I'll only kindle the conversation with a few examples:

Killer Pussy "Teenage Enema Nurse"
Frank Chickens "Fujiyama Mama"
Angel & the Reruns "Buffy Come Back"

For me, hearing these songs was like a giant "F- you" to the shitty mainstream radio of the day. Thanks WLIR-- what a life-saver you were.

Fred Schneider - "Monster in my Pants"
Fun Boy Three - "The Lunatics (have taken over the asylum)"
Hilary - "Drop your Pants"
The Normal - "Warm Leatherette"
Bollocks Brothers - "Horror Movies

Exude- Boys Just Wanna Have Sex

Even Malcolm McLaren's pop songs seemed pretty radical for their day. For example:

Buffalo Gals
Madame Butterfly

Does anyone who remembers WLIR remember the old WPIX? They were slowly going to a new wave format, and less than a year later, changed formats to "love songs, nothing but love songs". Listening to Mark Simone in the evenings at 7:30 was like appointment

That's right, that's where I first heard the Clash and the song was "Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad". I bought the album just on the strength of that one song and I loved it. My friends all thought I was insane for doing so. Years later, my fr

As has been reported elsewhere, Dave Blood of the Dead Milkmen died earlier this month.

Some of their great songs I remember from the 80's:

Punk Rock Girl
Bitchin' Camaro

Too bad it took the news of Mr. Blood's passing to remind me that his ba

Lots of early "Stiff" record label play, Ramones, Grahm Parker, The Records....!
I also remember Mark Simone & Meg Griffin being on that "version" of the station, & I may still have

I recall the PIX102 days all too well - and miss them more than words can express. The PIX Penthouse Party of 1979 was the finest radio show ever. Period. Their tag lines of "The Next 25 Years of Rock and Roll" and "From Elvis to Elvis, Dion to Devo" will
