Always enjoyed this one from Willie Alexander. If I recall correctly he was the first winner of BCN'S rock rumble.

Parallel 5th--more of a novelty type band had a hit with Carrots and Peas. I knew their original drummer Scott Seaback.

No, you had it right. Thanks for all the new stuff -- I don't even remember half of these people!

Speaking of The Silencers, I did this one a while ago but never posted it. Tennie was doing her Lene Lovich thing on this EP. Probably my favorite cover art of any local Boston release from the '80s.

Against La Peste wasn't it ? I used to have a tape of the finals. I wonder if I look around hard enough I still have it.

Thanks again to Randy and Somewhere for all the music.

Primitive Romance were (like Ata Tat) Boston-based Floridian transplants. They did the WBCN Rumble in 1982 and put out a 7" single 2 years later - "The Spirit's Still There" / "Missionary Plan Failed" (Ashamed, 1984). (Apparently they released another 7" in 1981 but I've never seen it or know anyone who has. Does it even exist?) Frontman/songwriter Lester Esser clearly locked himself in a room with a box of early Cure records while writing this stuff. He even had a Robert Smithesque haircut if I remember correctly. "Spirit" was their last commercially-available release, although they had some unreleased tracks on the radio afterwards. The band split up in 1987, with half the members forming A Scanner Darkly.

Esser soon became inspired by Sisters of Mercy, and so A Scanner Darkly was born. They had one album, "This Is the Way" (Sub Rosa, 1988), which was recorded in Boston but released on a Belgian label (and briefly available as an import). No sooner it was released than the band called it quits.

And now for something more commercial...

David Finnerty and the Jackals released just one single -- 1980's "Hold On" / "Don't Turn Out the Light" -- but what a single it was. The second 7" release on the Deli Platters' label, after Robin Lane and the Chartbusters' "When Things Go Wrong," one wonders what Warner Bros. heard in that song and not this one. The Jackals also played the Rumble in '82.

Finnerty did make it to the majors later on -- with his next band, The Joneses -- but that's a much sadder, less listenable story entirely.

Curious Figures were a Watertown, Massachusetts quintet. They put out a self-titled EP on their own Rugg Records in 1985. Like all the actually-good bands of the time, Boston ignored them.

Great posts SS. Sometimes it appears that all anyone cares about anymore is mixes and remixes ad nauseum.

<br>Only a band as delightfully-twisted as The Dark could set new wave music to nursery rhymes and the sounds of dogs barking. The Boston quintet (later sextet) released 3 records their 4 years together, most of them revealing their odd fixation on The Maps'/Salem 66's Judy Grunwald. They debuted with the "You Are In No Danger" 7" EP in 1981 (which included an offer form for a custom, personalized cassette for the low, low price of $6.66. I paid $1.49 for the 7", so suffice to say, I didn't get one. But I'd like to hear the surviving copies that are out there if anyone's still got one) from which comes "Houses R Falling." The next year, they released the "Darkworld" EP (Ambiguous, 1982), which included "We Can Be Children." A year later was their third and last release, the "Don't Feed the Fashion Sharks" EP (Relativity, 1983), highlighted by my favorite track of theirs, "Fashion Sharks." They disbanded in 1984. Late addition Reeves Gabrels -- who joined the band in their death throes (just as he did with Rubber Rodeo) -- later found some success with David Bowie in Tin Machine.

Greetings again!

My Bostonia Arcana compilation turned out magnificently, thanks to your generous additions of The Dark & Gluons. [8D]

I wonder if I could trouble you for "Houses R Falling"? I found a copy of this track from The Dark's single, but it was digitized & posted with several skips! It would be much appreciated.

Have an UberRad Day ;-/>

Two dudes and a token female rock photographer hooked up in Swingers Resort. Their lone 7" single, "Rockets & Rose," got a lot of airplay in Boston in 1981. (You can find it on some compilation.) "Movies" was the flip side. They also had "Hit List" on the first "Wicked Good Time" record the same year. I think those 3 tracks represent their entire released output.
