There is surprisingly little information on Animal Magnet out there, which is surprising, since they were signed to EMI, Paul Caplin went on to form Haysi Fantayzee and released the band THREE great singles between 1980 and 1982. I haven't seen a complete collection of theirs floating around the internet, and more surprising, the 7" version of their biggest (only) hit "Welcome To The Monkey House" wasn't online. Only the extended.

Animal Magnet's debut single is my favorite. Really jittery new wave. I also love vocalist Richard Magnet's delivery. The song is written by P. Caplin and R. Hubble.

The similarly strong b-side "Struck By Lightning" is solely written by R. Hubble, which leads me to think that Hubble is Richard Magnet's real name. There's a post on Last.fm that claims Richard Magnet went on to form a duo after Animal Magnet's demise, and that this duo released an LP. Does anyone out there know ANYTHING about this? I love the guys voice, and would be very interested to hear what he did next. Here's their final single 1982's "Baby Clothes" which is think is a great track.

I've also included a studio song called "Amor" from their split 7" flexi disc with Pete Shelley. There's also a charming interview with the band discussing promo for the Welcome To The Monkey House single.

Here's the tracklisting

Animal Magnet - Collection
1. Tomorrow Will Do
2. Struck By Lightning
3. Welcome To The Monkey House
4. Game Over, Play One
5. Baby Clothes
6. Bomba
7. Amor
8. Welcome To The Monkey House (Extended Version)
9. Baby Clothes (Extended Version)
10. Bomba (Extended Version)
11. Flexidisc Interview

Considering they released a single a year for three years, there MUST be an unreleased album floating around somewhere. Can anyone shed more light on Animal Magnet or the elusive Richard Magnet?

It's a shame no one's replied to this topic yet. Animal Magnet are badass! I just received off eBay a newspaper article about Animal Magnet. In it there's details about the band i've not seen anywhere else. Some things of note:

- Their shows features flame throwers and snake charmers (?!)
- Richard Magnet on their signing to EMI "We've been hiding for too long in a way, but now we're happy and ready and go out and show what we cn do... right across the world. We will happen this year, I feel absolutely sure about that." :-(
- Richard Magnet considers himself a "macho" man. It's him on the back of the Baby Clothes sleeve wearing leather.
- Richard Magnet describes Animal Magnet's music as "international body music"
- The group recorded an album called Creo with Vic Coppersmith-Heaven who produced Baby Clothes.
- As of this article, shortly after the release of Baby Clothes, Paul Caplin left the band to form Haysi Fantayzee and was replaced by Pickford Sykes and Sean Lyons (who later formed Raise The Dragon, later renamed Intimate Strangers who had the hit... "Raise The Dragon."
- Other members of the band were Bosco (percussion) Adrian Chilvers (bass) and the best named drummer in the biz, Matthew Wambam.
- Richard Magnet complains about all the other bands with Animal names cropping up, citing Animal Nightlife and Animal Magnet. The article ends with Magnet saying "I've always believed that the first one to success will get the name established once and for all, and I'd like to think that we're going to be the ones to do it." It's really too bad it didn't happen for them. Animal Magnet beats Nightlife and Magic by a mile.

Now if only I could solve the mystery of what Richard Magnet did after this article. There is NOTHING anywhere! Richard Magnet where are you? And when can I hear "Creo?"

I've noticed that more people download the Mediafire links rather than the other ones, and Animal Magnet didn't have a Mediafire link, so...
