Philip Jap made one amazing (AMAZING) self titled album in 1983. His story is interesting. He was one of the contestants on an early version of singing competition show. It was called the David Essex Showcase. He competed against the likes of Talk Talk and Thomas Dolby to be Englands next big new wave phenomenon. The entire show was once on YouTube, but sadly only this one performance now exists.

For those who haven't heard Philip Jap's album, it's one of my personal favorites. Every song is unique, distinctly new wave, and incredibly catchy. Jap enlisted in three of the very best producers of the day to help him with his album. A third of the album was produced by Colin Thurston, a third by Tony Mansfield, and a third by Trevor Horn. Here's the very Trevor Horny (hehe) single which opened the album. The videos great. The backup singers look crazy, he's shirtless most of the time, and there's some great mime action going on.

This is his video for Total Erasure. It was apparently inspired by Prisoner. It's wonderful, over the top new romantic drama.

His b-sides are incredible too. This is my favorite Philip Jap song. Produced by Tony Mansfield. It's scratchy, but the download link has a much cleaner version. This song is THE BEST!

Philip Jap has put up professional vinyl transfers of all his music, including his early singler "Judy And The School For Jiving" and some unreleased demos. It's not my file, but I'm sure he'd love you to have them, since he just uploaded them a few months ago on Philipjap.com. Here are the links!

Anything to keep the Philip Jap discussion alive. And if anyone has the David Essex Showcase, please share with me. The whole thing sounds wonderful. Enjoy!

Dominik

His cd was released in remastered form in Singapore i believe according to Discogs. Any chance of anyone sharing that here if they have it?
