Not long ago I was cheking on what alternative versions of SC songs I have - and came to the conclusion that songs from their first album can be completely substituted by other variants. So I had my little fun and here's what I came up with:

(01) Frustration (Mutant Moments version)
(02) Tainted Love (Hot Tracks mix)
(03) Seedy Films (BBC Richard Skinner Show)
(04) Youth (BBC Richard Skinner Show)
(05) Sex Dwarf (Razormaid mix)
(06) Entertain Me (BBC Richard Skinner Show)
(07) Chips on My Shoulder (Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing mix)
(08) Bedsitter (The Grid remix 1991)
(09) Secret Life (demo)
(10) Say Hello Wave Goodbye (7'' instrumental)

To me it sounds rawer and fresher somehow. Will be interesting to know what everyone thinks :D

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait to listen to this!

I was just listening to the original Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret today. Sometimes I get so caught up in finding undiscovered rarities, I neglect the classics like this. This has to be in my all time favorites. This was when musicians were making music using synths not making synth-pop. When this came out they were still calling it Euro-disco than it changed to Techno-pop. Some of the best lyric writing ever. The themes are so clever without be too serious.

Just for fun I put together my personal all-time top 50 in order.

All-Time Top 50

1 Human League - Dare
2 ABC - The Lexicon Of Love
3 Ultravox - Vienna
4 Japan-Tin Drum
5 John Foxx - Metamatic
6 Spoons - Arias & Symphonies
7 Alphaville - Forever Young
8 Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
9 A-ha - Hunting High And Low
10 Tears For Fears - The Hurting
11 Blow Monkeys - Animal Magic
12 Kissing The Pink - Naked
13 Pet Shop Boys -Behaviour
14 Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85
15 Yello - Stella
16 Depeche Mode - Black Celebration
17 INXS - The Swing
18 Spandau Ballet - Diamond
19 New Order - Substance
20 Visage - The Anvil
21 Dead Or Alive - Youthquake
22 Haircut One Hundred - Pelican West
23 Heaven 17 - Penthouse And Pavement
24 Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
25 SSQ - Playback
26 The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow
27 King - Steps In Time
28 Pseudo Echo - Autumnal Park
29 Bow Wow Wow - See Jungle! See Jungle!..
30 The Fixx - Reach The Beach
31 Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)
32 Rational Youth - Cold War Night Life
33 Naked Eyes - Burning Bridges
34 Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
35 Talk Talk - It's My Life
36 Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
37 The Specials - More Specials
38 Psychedelic Furs - Mirror Moves
39 Kraftwerk - Computerwelt
40 Kajagoogoo - White Feathers
41 Adam & the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier
42 Wall of Voodoo - Call Of The West
43 Blancmange - Happy Families
44 China Crisis - Working With Fire And Steel
45 Swans Way - The Fugitive Kind
46 Devo - Freedom of Choice
47 Duran Duran - Rio
48 Thompson Twins - Into The Gap
49 Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle
50 The B-52's - The B-52's

One might look at this list and think these are pretty commercial. I have thousands and thousands of recordings and I have everything under the sun practically many obscure New wave/80s related, but these are my favorite throughout the years that are on my turntable, cassette deck, CD player, MP3 player, computer whatever medium is at the time through the years. Most of these standards or Classics I got right out of the box when they were first released and put them on a turntable before they were deemed classics. Even though this list is pretty mainstream I believe the cream rises to the top.

I just saw Spoons live this past Saturday.

Got the CD re-issues at the show and got them signed by Gord and Sandy!

That's cool! I saw Spoons open for Culture Club in 1982 in Los Angeles. That's the 1st and last time I've seen them play live.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll do some more "alternative versions" soon - the next one I think is especially great, can't stop listening to it myself :D

As for favourite albums, that's a very interesting idea. Will think about mine :)

Great list.
I could easily go along with all of your choices above without even making a list of my own.

Gotta comment on the inclusion of The Swans Way though.....what an excellent choice.
Just been listening to Scarlet Fantastic - 24 Hours the other day hoping that would make me day
and in the end, it didnt - just the opposite.
Really cannot believe that two of the same three people that were in such an amazing project like Swans Way were responsible
for making this totally ordinary and utterly forgettable album. Just a darn shame.

I've had Swans Way since it came out and I never expected it to be released in a CD 3 times let alone.
It would be interesting to see why you didn't pick the other ones to put on your list. Sometimes it's more interesting to find out why somebody doesn't like something then it is why they do like it.
Like John Fox metamatic I think is brilliant recording.
A lot of people compair it with Gary Numan but early Ultravox was a big influence on Gary Numan.
