Well, actually, these ARE alternative versions - remixes (Nightporter, Taking Island) and re-recordings (Peculiar, Burning Bridges) can very well be considered as such. Even live recordings can be alternative versions if they are performed with significant changes to the original arrangement (not Japan's case admittedly as they pretty much always played the album versions). As for edits, well, they were done not for compilations but for single releases - that's how people got to hear bands, when they shortened their album tracks for radio play. Not really alternative, really, but Humanracer is right, Japan are pretty badly served by compilations mostly including album tracks (at least with their Virgin era songs). So that's an opportunity to spread them.

And anyway, no need to react this strongly to such a harmless piece of fun :D

Didn't clean the sound so there are vinyl artefacts. But that's what I have in lossless.

The 1982 single remix versions of Nightporter, both the 7" remix and 12" remix have appeared on compilation CDs over the years - more here: http://www.versioncrazy.com/2012/11/22/ ... ngle-1982/

There is a third version too, which was shorter, on a DJ-only promo 7" - and used for the promo video.

These are hardly great remixes or alternative versions in the strictest sense, yes it is fun to consider what might have been but it's never going to happen and Japan fans are left scratching around for crumbs such as the above list is. The majority of the so called alternative versions are either edits, bad remixes, or in one or two cases songs were the start or end has been altered. So, maybe they can be considered altered rather than alternative. Live version change depending upon how the band perform them and if you listen to the Nottingham Rock City gig they tried to add atmospheric backing vocals to some tracks, now that's alternative. The final gig in Japan includes a few alternative versions Life in Tokyo, European Son and The Art of Parties in particular. In previous tours Canton was shortened as either an encore or at the start of the gig while the full version was played during the set. Again, we are clutching at straws here and it is unlikely that we will ever hear any alternative, altered or indeed remixed versions on CD for a long while yet. So, good luck to those gathering up what they can, personally I stopped scrambling down in the dirt years ago.

This link wasn't working for me. Does anyone know if the same is posted somewhere else?

AJWAVE, thanks for the info about the CD "wish list" tracks. I'm also one of those still waiting for the Japan version of
Some Kind Of Fool. I don't much care for the 2000 Sylvian version. It doesn't sound enough like Japan, to me, if that makes sense.
Funny that they have the Virgin Video intro bass-line on the list. I actually have that, as an MP3 I ripped from video!

yep you're right...that link don't work :(
The intro bass line (sound id) could be included like a hidden track. The track listings looks interesting because includes some Karn / Sylvian & Sakamoto solo tunes

Here is my custom edit of Quiet Life. It's the single version without the guitar solo (3:35) but adds the full ending song. it's a re-creation of the Japansese edit from 1979 :)

I tried to made a custom gentlemen edit from the album version but the end of the original 7" single is slightly different (no bass line on this one).

Hi again:
A Recreation of the single "Art of parties" (edited from the extended version, with the shortened intro and a fading at the end) I think it is very similar to the original 7 inch version :P

Thank you very much, Charlbury! :D A great share, especially DJ edit - much sought after!

Omar, Methods of Dance was always an LP version, even on that 12". There's a live version on Oil on Canvas, but we won't count it.
