R.I.P. Dave "Swerve" Myrvold (Digital 80's)

Hello all,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of my good friend of almost 30 years David Myrvold or as many of you know him "Swerve". Dave passed away peacefully yesterday (Sept 18) at his family home after a courageous battle with cancer and is now at peace. He was only 52 years old and was one of the most caring, generous people you could ever meet. I had the honor of being by his bedside on Monday (Sept 16) to say our final goodbyes! One the most difficult things I've ever had to do!

His contributions to this and many other 80s sites (CFNY Spirit Of Radio, Flashback Alternatives etc.) wont soon be forgotten! Dave lived and breathed 80s New Wave and his musical knowledge was second to none! A true loss to us all!

As many of you know, Dave and I were responsible for putting together the Digital 80's series which believe it or not began almost 20 years ago to the day. Our objective behind this project was simple, remaster / preserve rare vinyl tracks that may never see the light of day on official cds. Its hard to believe we had 36 volumes in this series with many more to follow! Just two weeks ago, we were going through the tracks to be used on volumes 37-40 as well as a special Canadian Only Digital 80s set. Dave was so proud of this series and was responsible for insisting I post every volume on this group because music should and needs to be shared!

As the realization sets in that Dave is no longer with us, Its hard for me to imagine doing anything music related without him but I know he would want me to continue! With that said and as hard as it may be, I will continue working on the final volumes 37-40 as well as the Canadian Edition and dedicate every volume in the series to Dave "Swerve" Myrvold!

Lastly, One of Dave's favorite songs of all time was the beautiful 1984 "Valley Of Evergreen" by Alternative Radio. I have included the link below in memory of him!

I hope the valley is as green as you pictured it Dave!

I will miss and never forget you!

Paul

My condolences to his family and everyone that really knew him.
So many people on this forum we have crossed paths with over the years,
but we never really "know" each other or what they are going through.
The internet is an odd world. In some ways, it's a useful tool to "meet" people that you normally wouldn't,
but it also gives people an option to keep people at a distance.
It seems like I just read a post by Dave 'Swerve'.
He always had good information to contribute and didn't get caught up in the "catfights".
I wish his family and friends well.
Thank you Dave for all of your contributions on NWO over the years.

I am beyond sad to hear this news. We lost one of the best NWO members. :( While searching for Paul because a few of my Digital 80's cd's had gone bad, Dave contacted me and we chatted several times. We discussed about this series which I believe somewhat sparked the series being shared on this newsgroup. Paul is simple a wonderful human being and just really a flat out cool guy. I will surely miss him.

In my opinion, the Digital 80's is one of the coolest New Wave compilation series ever and thank you Dave and Paul for compiling it!

Dave, the highest respects to you my friend!!!

Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's our loss because of his love for the music and the communities he frequented, it's your loss because he wasn't just someone on the Internet, but an actual person with whom you had deep bonds. In times like this, please remember all the good times you had together, and focus on those. My deepest sympathies.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Even though I haven't been frequenting the board much these days, he always helped alert me to spam and other misdeeds. He seemed like a kind heart and a generous soul and his passion for music was second to none. May his memory live on through his music contributions. May he finally know peace after such a tremendous battle. I hope Ric is the first to greet him on the other side.

What a terrible loss, my condolences to his family.

His Hardest Hits cd comps were the best.

Rest in Peace Dave.

Very sad to hear. Dave and I were in direct contact over the last year because he was a firm supporter of my label. When I ran into challenges, Dave even provided a contact within Universal Canada to see if he could help get things moving. I was unaware he was ill.

It's approaching the 1 year mark when my friend Jay Adams (known on NW Outpost as PinkyBlue82) left us from cancer at age 51, and I've been feeling it. It's always sad when another new waver passes, be it an artist or supporter. We're a relatively small bunch as it is so it's more of an impact when a loss occurs.

I will think of Dave with any new releases I do because he was determined I not give up, and even sent a quick message of support a few weeks ago when he found things were happening again. I really appreciated his enthusiasm.

Scott

This is so sad. My deepest condolences to you Paul and to Dave's family. He was so young. I didn't really know him, apart from his posts here and he seemed like a great, friendly guy. Knowing that he was continuing to help Scott just a few weeks ago speaks volumes about his character. A real loss.

As I said in the past, the Digital 80s both of you put together are so special and really made a difference in my life. I had no idea he produced the Hardest Hits series, that's one of my favorite sets of CDs in my collection. Producing CDs is no small feat. I've produced a noteworthy CD too, not that it's the kind of music anyone around here would care about, so I appreciate some of the struggles that you go through. I'm glad you'll continue to carry the torch and keep his spirit with us.

This reminds me of writing to Red Flag a long time ago after seeing them in concert and meeting them afterward. I received a nice note back from Mark that said "Raise the Flag!" It really hit me hard later on when he passed. And thinking of that, it makes me grateful for everyone here. Dave will be missed.

Didn't know he compiled the Hardest Hits series, too. And his Digital 80s series is really great - so many gems, a tremendous work by a guy who really knew his stuff and cared about the lesser-heard music deeply. Such people are in the minority in any given field, so yes, his passing is a major blow. He left a legacy, though, and that's no mean feat. He will be missed and may he rest in peace now.

A sad loss for the New Wave community. As a way to show my respect to Dave's memory, I will be uploading the Digital 80's inside booklet artworks with a dedication to Swerve. Please don't ask me to upload previous volumes in FLAC or WAV. There are already members who have downloaded this collection. Probably someone else will offer to share it at some other time.

This is incredibly sad, especially since I was in constant communication with him early this year. He contacted me as he wanted to hear the songs I had included in the unreleased volumes of rare hits of the 80's. He was truly a gentleman and a pure music lover. I'm so glad he got to listen to those unreleased volumes. RIP Dave.
