Cleverly produced by Tony Mansfield, this American quintet sounds decidedly British on Messages‘ five nifty dance-rock tunes. Although nothing else matches up to it, the title track — with powerful drumming and a weedy synth figure — points up the band’s strengths: crafty, original songwriting and a likable singer in guitarist Paul McGovern.
